How to insert a wool 50 cal wad into a 45 barrel and keep it from leaning to the side. Any tips would be appreciated.

At the 3 Minute Mark I explain it. For demonstration purposes I used an Old .54 Barrel that doesn’t have a Breech Plug, i was using OVERSIZE .58 Cal Wool felt Wads. It’s the Same EXACT procedure using a .50 Cal Wool Felt Wad in a .45 Bore

Herschel when i load ox--yoke 45 wads in my 410 white flat they bunch/scrunch themselves . Yours dont ??

SCRUNCH EM ok I’ll try that. Thank you very much Lewis. And it helps a bunch.

I couldn’t think of a Better word for it? :)

It is kind of a Tedious Little Task to do, But it’s important to get the “Oversize” Wool Felt Wads Started Straight in the Bore, As you obviously know by starting this thread, They have a Tendency to Turn sideways. If they do Turn sideways They will stay that way all the Way Down the Bore. I have Tested this a few times on Cold Bore “Throw away” Shots Before i started a Group. I started them sideways intentionally, The Wad stayed sideways all the way down, When i hit the Powder i could Feel the “Give” in the Wad being Sideways. This would be a Fear of mine in a Hunting Situation “Follow up” Shot, A guy would be better off Carrying Correct Size Wads for “Follow up” Reloads.

Card type Wads of Correct Bore size that Turn Sideways will Straighten out on the Way Down, at least they always have for me. NOT the Case with Oversize 1/8” Wool Felt

I tried the process in the shop yesterday and it’s going to work real well. I’m really pleased with the accuracy using the oversized wool wads. The polywads accuracy not so good. Live and learn.

Thats supriseing . Herschel , Doc White used polywads to win the Manufacters Match at Freindship . I honestly would have thought the polywads would have been best . Wow........

Over Powder Wads are a Funny thing, I have had REALLY good luck with a Card Type, Or Poly with a Certain Bullet/Lube Combo, and HORRIBLE luck with another Bullet/Lube Combo? Even Combos that Worked STELLAR once, Then Fell Apart the Next outing??? I’ve had it happen SEVERAL Times. Wool felt on the other hand has NEVER EVER Let me Down, it works with everything for me, Grease Groove Bullets, Paper Patch, and Jacketed.

I have nearly given up on the Card Type Wads with Grease Groove Bullets, i own High Dollar Press Mounted Wad Punches, LOTS N LOTS of Vege Fibre Material, Poly Material (LDPE), Even Cork, All Thicknesses of Each. I stil play around with ALL Materials, But when it comes down to “COUNT ON IT” Time, i Grab 1/8” Thick, Oversize Wool Felt EVERYTIME :lewis:

The Hard Card Type Wads are WAY more MISS than Hit for me. I have spoke of this Stuff ALL through the Forums. They will Stick to the Bullet Bases under Certain Conditions, When i have a BAD outing/Shoot with Hard Card Wads and my Grease Groove Bullets, if i look Hard Enough i will find The Wads Scattered ALL OVER, all the way out to 50-60 Yards, and all in Between, Obviously From Sticking to the Bases. On The GOOD outings i will find the Wads 10-15 Yards from my Bench, ALL of them will be REALLY close together, This obviously means they are Separating from the Bullet Bases Consistently. This makes good Sense, As The Bullet Base is what Steers the Bullet, A Hard Card Wad Stuck, and Riding the Bullet Base will DEFINITELY throw it off!! BPCR Shooters Use Tiny Newspaper Wads in between the Bullet Base and Hard Card Wad to help the Wad “Separate” from the Bullet Base. It’s a WELL Known Problem in the BPCR World

What causes the Hard Cards wads to Stick from time to time, and Not others? I wish i knew, but I don’t? All i can say is they ABSOLUTELY Do!! I believe it has to do with the Lube Texture/Mixture, And Certain Weather Conditions? When everything lines up RIGHT/WRONG whatever you want to call it? They Will Stick to the Bullet Bases. To me personally, The Hard Card Type Wads, INCLUDING Poly (LDPE) just aren’t Worth Chancing it with my GREASE Groove Bullets. My Flat Base Paper Patch, and Jacketed are no Problem with ALL types of Wads

I definitely feel the oversize Wool Wads are worth the Extra few Seconds to get Right, They sure have Served me Well from my Beginning in Muzzleloading. I have shot them So much over the last few Years that I am pretty Efficient at “Scrunching” the Oversize Wool Felt Wads up :D Just like anything else, It becomes a SIMPLE Routine when you do it a few times, and get a feel for it :lewis: It is my opinion that there isn’t a Better Over Powder Wad Material Out there, at least that i have found? I have tried it ALL at 1 time or another. I would put my 1/8” oversize Wool Felt up against ANY, and ALL other Wad Materials.

Ive been shooting the 1/8" wool wads or cotton balls with my conicals and hb paper patch knurled bullets in the 410 super 91 . I got a Bunch of those wads so i havent tried the polys yet . The paper in between bullet and wad is innovative . Those BPCR guys try Everything !!! Wow , hope they get some sleep occasionally !!! Thanks Lewis , good food for thought .
