I saw this article on NAMLHUNT.COM, hadn't heard about the adapter before. Wondering if people have experience or knowledge of them? I'd be tempted to put one on my missouri river to turn it into more of an all weather hunting rifle seeing as I have the RM as well now and a lot of my hunting is in inclement weather.

Would there be any issues with pressure or anything like that to keep in mind? No plans on using any substitute powder so ignore that part of the article for the purposes of this post.

Ive used a Magspark to shoot BH209 in my TC Renegade. Its pretty handy if you want/need to use 209 primers. But if everything is working right you shouldn't need it. Pedersoli makes a very similar 209 adapter for their rifles.

Its more based on what I've read about hunting in rain with no.11 caps, which I do. I've stalked/still hunted through pouring rain with my inline and 209 caps and shot deer no worries. Just not sure how it'll go with the no.11s?

While I don't ever plan to hunt in the rain, I have hunted in wet conditions with my muzzleloaders. Never had a #11 cap not fire but I have managed to get a drop or two of water down the barrel which caused a misfire.

When I used my sidelock on a rainy/snowy day I would,
1. Load the gun in the garage or basement
2. pull the nipple and put a little extra powder under it and screw it back in.
3. Go outside and put the cap on
4. Use crisco around the nipple to seal the cap
5. tape over the muzzle.

You only get one shot. So make it a good one.

I don’t have much experience with them? But i do have a Magspark 209 that i use exclusively for Fouling a Clean Barrel in preparation of a Hunt, That is the ONLY thing i use it for. One thing I would be concerned about is Carbon Build up from the 209 Primers in the “Snail/Fire Channel/Powder Chamber” of a Sidelock ML, This is not a Problem with an inline ML, they use a Drill Bit twisted by hand to Clear it from the Breech Plug, This is impossible with a Sidelock. The other thing I notice with my Magspark is the 209 Primers STICK in it pretty Bad, I have to use a Tool to get up under the Edge and Pry them out.

I personally am not a fan of them, I prefer No. 11 Caps

I bought a Mag Spark a while back just to fowl my barrel as Lewis had suggested. What I found was after just two primers fired off the third would usually get stuck and the whole thing would need to be cleaned out. I gave up on it and now just fire off about 5 to 6 no. 11's to foul my bore before I load and go hunting.
A tight fitting no. 11 cap can be just as waterproof as any primer in rainy conditions.
I think trying to use a Mag Spark at the bench sighting in may take a lot of extra time, effort and cleaning. Who needs all that when regular black powder or Swiss along with a cap works just fine.;)

I've hunted in the rain and snow many times with my #11 caps. Mine fit tightly, sometimes have to be pried off if not shot. If it is raining really hard, I take a piece of Saran Wrap and cover the hammer and cap area. I've never had a problem. I carry my rifle on a safari sling, so water down the barrel isn't an issue, and water runs off the cap instead of into it.

That Pedersoli Missouri River Hawken caught my eye as well. That's a sharp lookin smokepole.

Just a heads up to those that get stuck 209s , like a patch stick it in your mouth and then insert in the adapter/spit in the cap and you can load all day . No carbon build up ,no where to leak as it is sealed . Same adapter in place 2nd season . It stays in place and gets flushed ,and yup fires BH209 in all my side locks aside from black or subs/ you might try it /it works/Ed

Ed, I was hoping you would post on the Magspark 209, I know you have been using them for quite sometime. I have often wondered how you get the Spent primers out? Mine stick BADLY without even firing the Rifle (I have never actually fired a Shot through mine) I am ONLY popping off 1 or 2 Caps now & then to Dry, and thats it. I do this to dry any excess oil & to simulate a Fouled bore, Each time i have popped a 209 through my Magspark they are STUCK in it Badly (I can only imagine how bad it would be if i had shot a Charge of Swiss Black) i have to Work at it pretty good to get the Spent 209s Free

It is not a problem if you stick a 209 (i use CCI) but the primer goes just like a patch in (your mouth) and I spit in the cap not the adapter . Sounds like a lot of bother but no more than a patched ball . Do it and you will not have a stuck primer , it just becomes a habit as long as you don"t swallow ! It provides the necessary lube ,yup it took me a while as I hated stuck primers too but as soon as I started doing that it solved the issue/Ed

Sounds like a neat little trick. Do you wet your your primer and spit in your cap before you go hunting, or is that only for at the bench?
I would be concerned about that moisture being in there for an extended time while hunting.

No concern primer will fire whenever the triggers pulled , I hunt with most thou I have several for killin paper . I do use a patch on the end of a small screw driver when cleaning adapter . I have after loading with OE powder gone 2-3 weeks during hunting season , nope no little kids around . Just me and the wife now and she knows they all are loaded (just like hers) :elmer:
