So "if" I could find a CVA Hunter 45-70 can this be converted to a 209 ignition for shooting Blackhorn 209 ?
It would seem just drilling out to accept a 209 breechplug with a vent liner would be the minimum gunsmithing needed.
Would any gunsmith be capable or would it have to go to a conversion specialist ?
I know the hunter is blued, that's fine.
I've read the hunter trigger is acceptable.
I know smokeless conversions are possible and available, I just want for Blackhorn.
I'm looking for lowest cost and pro's/cons and a source to convert.
Thanks for any input.

My nephew has a Hunter converted to 209 primer ignition. It uses an ASG 209 breech plug and was converted by Hollis Weber at CenterPunch USA. I don’t think he has shot BH209 out of it.

Just curious,if you only want to shoot BH209, why not get the fast twist 45 Accura?

I know it's odd but I just don't like the hanging trigger guard breakdown on the Accura. The Accura among a few others is a consideration and many people love them.
Thanks for response.

Not odd at all, I personally would convert the Hunter over getting the fast twist Accura. I like the faster twist of the Hunter, all steel action, and that it could shoot alternative powders if you wanted. I wouldn’t go 209 though, I would get the brass module with LRMP or Direct Ignition.

I'm thinking 209 on a break action mainly for simplicity and cost. I'm just a hunter and don't shoot much except to sight in, practice ranges, and hunt. So max shots are 20-40 per year. I used a new rifle this year and totaled 17 shots then tagged out.
If I was doing a high end bolt conversion on 700 Rem or Savage I probably would go direct or LRMP. I'm seeing a lot of controversy over both direct and lrmp so not sure if it's worth the extra $.
But I'm here to learn more about Muzzleloaders.

Check with Luke before deciding on the plug. 209 works just fine with BH209 but try to maintain a upgrade path to LRMP also. LRMP will offer some benefits with those other powders. Plus it works fine with BH209 also. I think the $200 price at CenterPunch is using the ASG 209 plug. Around another $100 for LRMP...i think....Ask Luke to be sure.

If you want a Hunter, better not wait to long. They were discontinued for 2020, and replaced by the new blued Scout. This is the new entry level rifle.

That's what got my interest, I found a few > $250. So do the 209 BP and shipping (+ -) $500 for 25" barrel 1" in 20" fast twist .45 cal. VS more$ to a lot more.

20-40 shots a year is actually pretty high volume compared to most people. I personally would go with LRMP for that much shooting.

If only shooting BH209 and wanting to stick with 209 primers, then I would look at the encore barrels MGM sells.

As far as LRMP vs DI, DI does have an advantage over some LRMP systems out there. But when compared against Arrowhead Gen2 LRMP there's very little difference which is why I haven't bothered offering a DI system. Also, not a huge fan of guys loading over a live primer.

Would you take a hankins DIS on trade toward your G2 lrmp system for my accura v2?

I have 209 plugs on both of my conversions; neither have given me any troubles, but I keep them cleaned out. I drop way too many smalls to be messing with LRMP modules, so no way I would go that route.

Just make sure that you are sending it to a GUNSMITH for conversion and specify which 209 primer that you want it headspaced for.

I've only seen a few that do the CVA conversions and only one that's affordable. Haven't contacted anyone local yet. I've read a lot of people are happy with the 209 vs LRMP so still leaning to 209. The install cost + buying an accurate powder scale, primer unit, and primers = cost of the rifle +.
I know the LRMP unit and smokeless are better......but one video I saw said for a:
cheap rifle hmmmm, not a way to get my business, I do quite well with "cheap rifles"
And good for 100 yds? With smokeless?
My knowledge base says 300yds easy with a 1:20 .45 even with Blackhorn.
Am I wrong? Or worse?
I'll repeat, I'm here to learn.
