Rust patch out of Renegade after cleaning

I'm going to guess that you're using city water from the tap. I get that every single time if I use heated city water from the tap. I believe it is the chlorine added to most city water. By heated, I mean from warm but I can put my hand in it without it being too uncomfortable, to boiling hot...

Wads and PRB / Great Plains rounds.

Idaholewis did not use hollow base bullets. He used flat base bullets. A wad between powder and a flat base bullet really helps to protect the base of the bullet, which is what "steers" the bullet. Lew also noted that lead fouling was reduced from using a wad vs. not using one. Without a wad...

    Rules

Someone telling you when you are allowed on THEIR property is not telling you how to hunt. Not even close. You do not have the right to just go anywhere on anyone else's property anytime you want to track a deer you shot. You'd have to be living under a rock to not recognize that in this day...

Range Report: .50 Renegade with sized Hornady Great Plains bullets

Hot and quick burning T7 in 3f may be damaging the skirt on the bottom of the GPB's, perhaps that is where the small lead flecks are coming from. I would also recommend trying 2f. With T7, I'd start at around 70 grains and work up. I'd think somewhere around 80 to 90 grains will show best...

    Peep Sights

I'm using a Williams ghost ring for a rear sight, in the factory rear sight position on my TC Renegade. They don't make them anymore, I found one used on ebay a few years ago. They are a fairly large diameter and have a green F.O. dot on each side for lining up with a front. I hunt in timber...

    FYI

I haven't seen #11 caps in any shop in my area for a good year and a half now. I look every time I go to any store that normally carries them. Walmart, North40, Sportsman's Warehouse, and a few locally owned. Zilch. Still mightly sparse around here for them.

Has anyone ever had a R.E.A.L bullet move off the charge?

I've always assumed that the Hornady GPB was made by Hornady themselves, but it's possible they contract it to REAL? I've used a fair amount of them in my .54 Renegade, back when they made them in .54 (I still have 4 or 5 containers of them rat-holed for myself), and have definitely found a...

How do you carry Conicals in the field for hunting?

With a conical for my .54 I use a speed loader to hold them as well. The TC 4-in-1 loaders are what I have.

    Patches being destroyed

While I've never needed to use an overpowder patch when shooting RB, I would say you'll want to lube it just for the sake of not having an unlubed smoldering patch land out in dry grass and catch the woods on fire.

    Nice surprise this morning.

If there's a possible positive side, you just reminded me I've been wanting to buy a freezer thermometer alarm for my basement chest freezer. It is now ordered.

    After the hunt.....

I also find being able to judge yardage a useful skill to have, both for muzzleloader and archery uses. I first started in the early 90's when I went from shooting instinctively with a recurve to shooting a compound bow with sights. There were no affordable laser rangefinders back then and...

TC Tree Hawk or Grey Hawk shooters??

I've always wanted a Greyhawk in a .54. A few years ago I came across a .50 at a gun show, it is the only one I've ever seen in person. I passed on it since it wasn't a .54. I still think about that silly decision I made, really wish I would've bought it.

Advice on hunting loads for my .54 Hawken

Just FYI, you typo'd your patch thickness size. If you didn't, remind me to never mess with you! :D

New User Needs Advice On Range Cleaning

I didn't see anyone else mention this. You said they swabbed and then fired a primer before loading again, then asked about swabbing pushing fouling crud down ahead of the jag/swab and remaining against the breech plug. That is the reason they fire a primer after swabbing, before loading again...

    measuring black powder

I noticed the quick loader is labeled as a "Pellet" quick loader. That is designed to hold three 50 grain Pyrodex pellets, which are tightly pressed together in some manner. The powder measure is calibrated for loose black powder. That is your discrepancy. 50 grain tightly pressed together...

Fouling a barrel for hunting.... and what about the end of the day

My rifle hits low with the fouling shot in comparison to fouled shots. I leave mine loaded if I don't shoot, and so like a clean bore since I use "real" BP. I use a 75 yard zero, and just remember that my first clean bore shot is a 50 yard zero instead.

Advice on hunting loads for my .54 Hawken

In my TC .54 Renegade. 80 grains of 2f or 3f with a .530 RB and a .018" pillow ticking patch hand lubed very lightly to the edges with Track of the Wolf's mink oil. This load is very accurate if I swab every shot. Can go two shots before needing swabbed before accuracy suffers. 425 grain...

    Why In-Line Muzzleloaders?

I own a 3/4 ton diesel pickup. I haul things in the bed that I wouldn't want inside the cab, and I tow around 6k-9k trailers with it. Since that is my needs and interests, everyone who drives a car or SUV is clueless, right? Bought a Prius? An EV?, Pshhh, why would you get something that...

    So..... why a muzzleloader?

I like hunting with short range weapons. I have shot compound bows since my teens, for some reason I waited until I was 38 or so (I'm now 49) before ever shooting a caplock muzzleloader. Absolutely fell in love with it. I solely like caplocks and shooting PRB. There's a bit of interest in...

    I wouldn't worry one iota if you're consistently getting 1.5" groups at a 100 yards. ;)
