What sabot bullet combo for deer out to 100 yards

Bronko220002, just as an fyi, I contacted Speer through their website, asking whether the DeepCurl line of bullets specifically, the .429cal/240gr and the .451cal/300gr, have been discontinued. Their response was: These bullets are still being made and distributed. I search all the regular...

What sabot bullet combo for deer out to 100 yards

Assuming I can't find any Speer DeepCurls (have not seen them in over two years), the .44 (.429) cal 240gr XTP with a Harvester green CR sabot will be my bullet/sabot combo going forward. For the price, out to 150 yards, I cannot justify any other bullet.

    Encore/Omega breech plugs

Ron, I have to say that the breech plug you made for me years ago, by converting an OEM plug that was worn out, works pretty great. I use the Lehigh/SSK ventliners which last a LONG time. You also reamed out the primer socket to allow for a little rubber o-ring to help seal the primer from any...

    New to me TC Omega

On my Omega, I have always used a small amount of grease along with basic white Teflon tape on the breech plug (grease on after I wrap the plug). It glides in and I've never had a seizure, and cleanup is pretty easy. I shoot with BH209 exclusively. Is there a reason I should not use a bit of...

    New to me TC Omega

Also consider using a bit of plumber's teflon tape, the white stuff, with a bit of grease.

    Encore/Omega breech plugs

I had an old plug that Ron converted for me to use SSK/Lehigh ventliners. I believe he also reamed out the primer insert to allow the use of an O-ring, which gives me some leeway in the primers I use. Fortunately I have a bunch of CCI and Winchester primers that work pretty clean, although my...

    T/C Impact Barrel Screws Loose

With the Omega, I also learned that the hard way, banging away at the pin, only to realize that I was hitting it from the wrong side. In the link I provided, I believe you should follow the pics, meaning lay out the action, with the barrel pointing to your left. That way the pin should come...

    T/C Impact Barrel Screws Loose

This is the bane of latter day Omegas, where TC decided to replace the welded lugs with lugs secured to the barrel with torx screws (size T8). They all eventually get loose and will affect accuracy. And, as you discovered, the screws underneath the trigger assembly are a b!tch to access. Go...

    Coyote problems

I hunt a vineyard property where the main goal is deer population control. Since coyotes help with that we generally let them walk. That is, as long as they maintain a healthy respect (fear) of humans. A few years back the local pack got a little large and a little too bold so we took out...

Breach Plugs, tape and fouling, what do you do???

Two things: 1. I know the tape you are using is TC-dedicated Teflon tape but you might want to try regular white Teflon tape which is not as thick. I tried the pink and found that it did not leave much room for error- if I overlapped it too much, I could not get the plug all the way in. The...

    Coyote problems

Most northern coyotes have at least some wolf DNA. They will occasionally interbreed in the wild where their territories overlap. As you go farther south, the coyotes will have a higher percentage of domestic dog DNA, also from occasional interbreeding.

    Do sabots need lubricanting

As others have suggested, if you need to lube your sabots with some petroleum-based product or wax or whatever, you are likely using a sabot that is too tight. Between Harvester, MMP and those sabots made for specific brand MLs, they all have somewhat different diameters. You would be better...

Random thoughts on the future of inlines

I hate to admit it but I think that muzzleloading is going diminish to almost nothing with a few niche producers. I started the ML game in the early 2000s when there were 4 or five U.S. companies - Remington, Ruger, Savage, Knight and T/C. CVA and Traditions were the Spanish upstarts. What do...

    Dragging deer - best way

Do a search for "Glenn's Deer Handle," it basically looks like a ski rope with the line forming a loop that you loop around either a buck's antlers and forelegs or a doe's neck and forelegs. It works very well, much better than the standard deer drag strap that is pretty common. The way the...

    Knight disc extreme.

I was a bit confused myself (back in 2013) which is why I have a bunch of pics. I had to post on this site and Smyrnagc set me straight. Depending on the primer you use, after a shot, the primer may not want to easily pop out. I just slide the bolt back an pull the trigger again to loosen...
