Yesterday was my first day of muzzleloader hunting in Virginia. ML season has been open for a week, but a lot of OT at work and family commitments kept me out of the woods.
I saw multiple deer all morning. A few good size does and a nice 6-pointer came within sight, but none of them gave me a shot. I hunt from the ground in the thick stuff, so I spend a lot of time seeing deer but without a shooting lane.
I switched to a spot up a hill just off an old logging road, where a game trail comes in from behind the hill.
I heard what sounded like a deer trotting through the dry leaves and then the creek. I could see glimpses to confirm a deer big enough to harvest and could see he was going to come almost on top of me.
He stepped out from the brush very close (I used my rangefinder after the fact to measure exactly 17 yards), I put the crosshairs on him and my Accura did its job.
300 gr Hornady XTP Mag over 105 gr BH209 knocked him dead immediately.
It was a backbreaking haul getting this guy out but absolutely worth it.
