I just shot a deer with a 290 gr Barnes TMZ with 120 grs of fffg 777. It was only a 40 yd shot but it was facing me and I took a neck shot. The exit hole measured 2 1/2 by 3 inches and looked really nasty ( not even any hide at the exit hole ).
Dog you are correct. Usually a pass through. This one had some shoulder bone to deal with on the other side and was found under the skin. 225# 8pt. shot by my little brother. Heavy rack, old deer, but real deformed.
Recovering a "Barnes" is akin to having a lucky gold piece in your pocket or finding a flint arrow head in a recently plowed field.
It just does not happen very often.
On an Elk hunt in Montana I found a blackened very tarnished Winchester
(WRA) 45-65 cartridge case. It was only chambered in the 1876 lever rifle and maybe the 1886 lever rifle. I looked for others on the ground but the shooter only fired once.
