I have been using them for years. Need occasional sharpening but seem to work well. Just be sure to punch your wads out on the end grain of a 2 or 4 X 4 for the best results and less wear on the punch.

Is the Harbor Freights Hollow Punch advisable? If the guy is just starting out?
I'd say go for it. There are certain things I won't buy from HF but the punches should be as good as any that you'll pay 2 or 3 times the price for. Besides, they are cheap enough to replace.

Thank you all kicking around different ideas, The 2x4 or 4x4 are well advised. I know 7/16 for the .44 wad also been informed the 1/2 might need opening for the .50, been told depends on type of felt and lube cut a few and give them a try first, file or dremmel can open the 1/2 a little aint nothing gonna close it back hahahahahahahha
