Just came in today and I tore it apart, cleaned it and pulled out a huge oil soaked rag that was hard and crusty from sitting around for so long. Bore is about as perfect as you could ask for! 1850-60's easily. Lock works beautifully and again, super super clean, strong main spring. Stock has some very old repairs around the tang and lock plate but it looks great and everything is solid. Nipple came right out, cleaned it, greased it reinstalled it. If I had shot or ball, I'd go shoot it! Ramrod appears to be original as well. One side is a loading jag and then it tapers down greatly to around 30 cal and has a loop jag for a cleaning patch. gorgeous walnut stock too. I removed the barrel and tang, wiped everything clean and then wiped on a thick layer of linseed oil and let that soak up before wiping up the excess.

well this is neat! Got some info back from TOW

British appearance fowler, circa 1820. Trigger guard they said looks like Philadelphia style and that I should do some research on the name around the PA area via tax records. Lock is also 1820 era and has been converted over to percussion.

Wonder what it would take to convert it back to flintlock.

Started off easy with 70gr powder, but in the end, made some tighter fitting cardboard wads, upped my charge to 90gr black mz, 1oz #5 shot. Much better sound when she went off!

1st shot 70gr black mz, looser fitting wads.

2nd shot with 90gr black mz

#5 shot is a good pellet. What kind of shot-pattern are you getting?

That is one of the cleanest 19th century guns I've actually ever laid eyes on; man, but you're lucky. In fact it could pass for a modern made gun that's been "aged" by the builder; but only with a casual inspection, though. I don't think it's been fired that much. It most certainly has been cared for. :thumbs up:

If that's #5 shot that pattern should work nicely.on small game...even turkey.

yep 1oz #5 shot. It's pretty light for a 10ga but I just don't want to push things hard on this old gun. Next time I will jump it to 1 - 1/4oz shot.

I find No 4 shot the best for my muzzle loading shotguns, more carry and knock down. Nice old piece you have there.

It will be interesting to see then how the pattern changes. You're off to a great starting point FG . 👍

Buck N Ball would be an interesting experiment in such a large bore. Beautiful shotgun!

The gun wants to shoot, for sure. I'm confident you'll find the "sweet spot" for shot patterns very soon. I do like that "little" gun.
