Today I got a chance to shoot the new rifle and I decided to go straight to 100 yards. I shot my 408 gr RCBS 11mm rifle bullets paper patched. I was using 80 gr of powder measured. With an over sized over powder wad.

The wind was off and on but not super hard. Not knowing where to set the sight I just shot one with the sight setting set at 0-0. That ended up with a bullet into the dirt that threw gravel into my targets. If you see some tiny holes it was from that. After some shooting to get it on the paper I was finally close. By this time the sun was fully behind me.

This is where my sight was set for 100 yards. If I understand Lee's numbers that one is .16

I was struggling with windage. I would be 2" to the left. Then I was 2" to the right. What I realized was I was not seeing the bubble right.

.

So after figuring out that I needed to shade the front sight a bit more. I shot my second group.

That group was right at 2" neighborhood.
I was very happy with the way the gun shoots without playing with loads. That load has been my standard load that I have recommended for barrels like this one.
I worked the trigger over and the set trigger is perfect with no creep and is set at 10 ounces.
I haven't shot groups in years. All I shoot is steel and over cross sticks. Going back to shooting my targets I can tell I need a different target. The one target I printed only printed half and it was very hard to see.
I got to be honest I am having more trouble seeing the target than I used to. That is disappointing for me to admit.
All in all the new rifle is starting out great and I am happy with it. Next time I hope to get out to 150 and 200 yards.

That is nothing to Sneeze at for the 1st time out with a Brand new Rifle, and Sight system My Friend! I know you will improve on it :lewis:

My VERY 1st advice Ron, You HAVE TO CHANGE Your Target to a Round BLACK Bull/White Background (At least try it) and your insert, Get a Card of Shaver CIRCLES, Then Simply Match the Circle insert to the Round Bull, You will be SHOCKED at how well it works. This is the ABSOLUTE KEY To my Success with this Sight System. There is NO WAY I could shoot as well as i do with the Shaver Beads, I do use them when i am setting up a Rifle to Hunt with, but that’s it for me with those! ALL of my Target Shooting is Done with Circle inserts, and Round Bullseye Targets. There is a Reason they use them to 1,000 Yards and Beyond, There is NOTHING Better out there!

As for the Bull Size, It really doesn’t matter as long as you can see it (After all We aren’t shooting a Competition, so who cares?) Of course there are Official Sizes per Yardage. The key is being able to see it, So you can Shoot a Comfortable Group at it. So maybe try a 300 Yard Black Bull (MR63) at 200 Yards? The MR63 is 35" X 35" paper, With a 17 3/4" Black Aiming Bull, Then simply Match your insert to it. These Targets are less than a Buck a piece at BACO, If you get the Black & White 1” Square Target Pasters you can Keep fixing and Re-using the Targets

Another thing, Some would think I’m nuts for this :) I don’t use the Bubble Levels in my Sights, Even at 825 Yards. They are REMOVED and in Boxes somewhere around here? Fact is, I don’t trust them. I have played around with them Quite a Bit and had REALLY odd things happen? I have placed HIGH QUALITY Levels on the Top Barrel Flat up by the Sight and had Readings WAY off from the Bubbles in the Sights? When i Kant the Rifle to get the Bubble centered, It feels Wrong to me? It’s hard to Explain, But fact is I don’t use the Bubble Levels in my sights. I might re-visit them again soon, When my new Rice 1-24 .50 Cal gets Finished

6 inch per hundred works great /200 needs 12 inch and so on /Ed

I agree :lewis: Though i prefer to use an 8“ Bull at 100 Yards. In short, i use what i can see the Best, since I am not in a Competition Shoot it doesn’t matter? I routinely use 600 Centers for 500 Yards, 300 Centers for 200 Yards, Etc. Simply because i can see them better. My Goal is to Shoot the Best Group i possibly can. The better i can see the Target (Regardless of the Yardage) The Better i can ”LOCK ON IT” And Shoot the Best Possible Group i can.

as long as your cant is always the same you will be ok at 1000 but as you said you dont shoot targets that much mostly hunting

I agree Bob, Even if the Level in the Front sight is not actually Dead level with the Rifle itself, As long as you center the Bubble in the front sight every shot, You would at least be consistent. I stil don’t like the darn things though

I made sure the barrel, the globe, and the rear sight. Were all level. I haven't really used one much so it feels odd twisting to get the level right. It is a little hard to see the level at times.
I have shot a lot of 1" groups at 100 yards. I have even had a few sub 1" groups at 100 yards.
But in all honesty 2" is probably where most of my groups fell with my hunting loads after developing them. And 2" groups are perfectly fine for hunting. But with this rifle I'm going to try to reduce that a little. It will make longer ranges a little easier. I might use it for a varmint rifle this year.
Testing different bullets for this project will be fun.

Many dovetails are not perfectly milled square or level. I have dial indicated a few in the mill and cleaned them up with a few thousands shave on the high side. Having a sight that slopes downhill slightly is very annoying. Many times it's not that noticeable with the stock bead or blade until you change the sight to some long range style unit.
