Your bud probably read some where that turning the adjustment "up" makes the xhairs go down which is correct. Where he fell down is in understanding that when the xhairs go down the POI goes up.
 
follow what you scope markings say you will be fine when you get your buck and your buddy misses his
 
If you want your point of impact to raise, which way do you turn your turret, up or down?
Try this trick, with your RIGHT hand make a fist and with your RIGHT hand next to the turret you want to adjust, point the thumb in the direction you want to move the POI and the fingers on the RIGHT hand will point in the direction to move/adjust the turret. Works for both elevation and windage, period.
