I finally got my hands on more BM3. Put a Nikon Omega BDC on my Encore and realize that is designed for 3 pyrodex pellets and a 250 grain Shockwave. Wondered if anybody had done chronograph work with BM3 enough to know how much loose powder would generate the same velocity as the 3 pellets? I will be at the range this weekend to try to figure this all out but wondered if anybody had already gone through this. Glad to have my BM3 back!

This site has some ballistic data that may help. I shot some over a chronograph but it was a long time ago and the data seems to have disappeared. Based on limited data I would guess that 80-90 grains would be equal or maybe a little higher velocity than three Pyrodex pellets. Do not estimate performance on felt recoil as the BM3 tends to have light felt recoil for quite high velocity. Much lighter felt recoil for the same velocity as Tripple Seven which had high felt recoil.

Thanks for the lead, on paper, I think you are correct. The magkor ballistics indicate that 90 grains of BM3 will generate roughly 1971 f.p.s. with a 245 grain sabot. According to Toby at http://www.hpmuzzleloading.com/LoadsBallistics.html a 150 grain (three pyrodex pellets) charge will generate 1973 fps with a Hornady SST .452. This is close enough for me to verify at the range this week and I feel safe staying within the recommended charges for BM3. I didn't want to speculate as where to start.

Thanks for the information. This is why I love this site!
