more rain than we are used to.

no need to water for a week because we have had so much rain. the winter wheat is tall and green from all the rain but no wheat heads in it. they are going to cut it all for hay. makes great cattle fattening hay so not a total loss. garden is growing like nuts and ahead of what it normally is at this point in time. 100 yard dirt road to the black top is really getting soupy. may have to park every thing up by the blacktop soon. man are my bushes and trees growing from all this rain. was to fargo n.dak over the week end to visit my 92 year old mother. rained from fargo to here all the way back. whats it like in your area?

We had lots of rain in May, usually one of our hottest and driest months. However, the rain has been spotty in June. It all added up to everything in my garden coming in at the same time except for the squash. 

I'm just about done picking the last of the green beans and sugar snap peas and the purple-hull peas will be done by next week. The hot peppers will continue to produce until winter. 
My wife even has a small pineapple growing. It will be interesting if it gets to maturity.

The hunting tag results came in yesterday and I only drew 2 tags .. one for archery and one hog hunt. But my granddaughter drew 5 tags and she can bring a guest. I just have to make sure that I'm the one she picks.

It depends on the hog. Most of those down here are scrawny and I don't bother to drag them out. Some are good for sausage but I've never killed one that had enough fat to be good enough for pork chops.

Where falcon is, the hogs look like escapees from a hog farm. They look like good meat hogs.

i have a native american friend who lives next to the canadian border. for years he has raised russian wild pigs. they have stripes on the young ones and they can take the really cold winters very well up their. he takes the younger pigs and cooks the whole thing in the oven and the meat is very red and unlike tame hog. they taste wonderful. they dont like fancy food and they have a lot of forest that they run on and do well by them selves. i dont think they are like the hogs you have down their. oh yes, they are quite dangerous, they will chase you if you get in the fence with them.

Florida may be the first place in the New World to get hogs. DeSoto brought them in the 1500's. He landed near Tampa and his expedition went within 15 miles of my house. The hogs have had a lot of time to get rangy and tough here.  ig:

i have to post a reply here because of the stupid computer acting up again. i want to post how to make tough wild meat good to eat. cut in cubes like stewing meat. marinate in your favorite sauce for a couple of days. then put it in one of those small stove top pressure cookers that are cheap to buy. at full steam do the meat 20 min with out much water in it. then take out and put it on the grill and finish, use a paint brush to keep putting your sauce on with clean paint brush as you grill it. bet any of that wild tough meat will turn out tender and good to eat this way. got it off of you tube and it worked for me.

rained hard again yesterday afternoon and evening. unusual for this time of year. supposed to rain hard tomorrow also. ive planted 100/s of bushes and trees over the last 21 years here. they are really growing like nuts now with the last 2 years of good rain. my 2 catalpa trees are finally growing and in bloom this year. they have been stunted for 20 years with the wind we have and dry conditions. the last two years they finally are going. must have a root ball as big as a big tree. they are my favorite tree of them all.

Down here we call them catawba trees and the only reason anyone plants them is to get catawba worms for fishing. They are a great fish bait.

There's a big moth called a sphinx moth that needs catalpa (catawba) leaves to exist. The caterpillar form (the worm) only eats catawba leaves.

If you get too many worms, they eat all the leaves so the tree suffers. The thing is, the best way to reduce them is to use them as an excuse to gather 50 or so and go fishing.  :twisted:

I donated many thousand Catawba worms to the fish in Missouri when i lived there . Had good luck on Crappies with them .

did a lot of reading on them. dont see any on my two young trees. i do have trouble from time to time with tent catipillars on my chokecherrie bushes. i just cut them out but if they get too bad i have them sprayed. i like the shape and leaves on the catalpa trees. if you prune them right when they are growing they look very nice in the yard. one year i had huge fast grubs with wiskers on them. if you touched them they would cause a sting. they never hurt anything that i could see, just had them one year. they were all colors also. i like big leaves on trees like the catapa. up in minnesota i like their bass wood trees. huge leaves on those trees also. loads of maple and bass wood in the northern part.
