Is it possible to take a 45/70 cast bullet and paper patching it to fit in a 50 hawken style rifle. Reason I'm asking is I have a box of 250 bullets would like to try and use them because I'm not going to reload for the 45/70 anymore.

Rl, That would be a BIG step up in patching, The 45-70 bullets should be .458 Diameter, For your .50 Cal Hawken You need to be .498 to .500 finished/patched bullet (depending on your exact bore Diameter?) The preferred bullet diameter for Patching a .50 Cal is .492, 2 wraps of 9# onion skin paper will put you at .498-.500

I have 2 brands of 9# onion skin i just recently picked up (2 reams of 500 sheets) both measure .002, so 2 wraps of my paper will ad 8 thou, bringing a .492 Bullet up to .500, which is about as ideal as you can get

MMP or Harvester Sabots may be your best option if you want to utilize those bullets in a 50 caliber.
