its been hard mowing all i have to mow with a walk behind. my sister called today and said she bought me a riding mower and it will be delivered wed. God bless her. she said i took care of her when she was young now she wants to do things for me. she lived with me when she went to high school and i did take care of her. she has a big generous heart. now i can mow even when im tired.

to be honest i usually have a glass or red table wine before i mow. makes walking easier. i never wanted a riding mower until this year. i have to admit it is time for one. now i can keep the place looking good. people like to drive by my place just to see the oasis in this desert. my wife told me the other day and she is right. when we want to sell in a couple years it must be in the summer. with every thing and in bloom and so green it looks so much different that in the winter when all the leaves have fallen. just picked 20 nice cukes. we eat and so does all our friends. each week from now on their will be more and more cukes until frost. peas are done, now climbing beans and peppers and tomatoes take over as well as grilling squash. all winter long i eat winter squash. they are doing well also. our lawn will never look bad from now on. thank you sis.

There's no way I could ever get my lawn mowed with a walk behind although I do have one for trimming. The main mowing is done with a 48" Zero Turn

tomorrow it is going to be delivered, from that moment on i will do every thing i can with it and walk only behind the honda where i have to trim. i know it is time as my legs said it was.

just make sure you spray out the mower deck after each use. Keeps it from gumming up over time with grasses and all that other gunk.

By keeping them clean (under the deck and the whole machine) you can increase the life of your machine.

I have an old 4 blade push mower used at the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Art that dates back according to stamping on side plates and its serial number to 1861. This push mower is in excellent condition with correct paint color. In its day it was a high dollar unit - sold for $7.79 in 1870. We have turned down $950.00 for it a few years ago, told the distributor when he gets to $1,200 we'll talk.

that is quite a piece of machinery. we had push mowers when i was growing up. however they were rarely used. my granddad and grandmother would simple stake out two young calves on their lawn on their farm and the calves kept it trimmed. by late fall they were fat to butcher and that was the beef for the winter. they didnt butcher until it was below freezing every day. they they butchered the two young ones and packaged them up good and put the packages in a big box in the entry way. by spring the two critters was all ate up. they ate better than people do today. usually a big fat hog was in that storage box also. in the summer they ate meat from the local small town store. the other day i met two south africans that were on harvesting crews that are doing the wheat that headed out this year around here. my mother is 92 and she told me all the harvesting crews when she was young were turks. she said they slept in the barn on clean hay and they fed them three meals a day fit for a king. apple pie for desert for dinner and supper. always bacon or pork chops and eggs for the early first meal of the day. my mother said she and her mother would get up at 4 am and start cooking and baking bread. those guys ate like kings but they worked very hard and needed the calories. real butter, real cream on the pancakes. real milk full fat from the cows. turks love cucumbers and they gave them piles of them from the garden. i still my self eat the cukes the way my grandmother made them. real full fat cream, onions sugar and vinegar mixed with sliced cucumbers. those turks ate better than any harvest crew to day. their were no combines then just threshing machines. i remember those well.

My grand parents lived on 1.500 acre farm near Penn State PA, their crews had a really good deal, feed three meals a day fit for a king with all the fixing, plus rooms in the hired man's quarters. This was usually a 10-12 man crew going from one farm to the next one each year. These crews would appear several times a season whenever the hay was ready to be cut (4) cuttings, fruit to be picked or plowing was needed (regular routine year to year).

my grandpa would plant watermelon seeds in the rotted down straw piles from a couple of years before. never watered them and came back in sept and hauled in lots of melons and every one would eat and eat melon. your right, in the old days the harvesting crews had to be fed good or they wouldnt work for you, also they worked hard and burned up calories. those meals were fit for a king.

works great

got the new riding mower today and figured out how it worked. the instructions were worthless. mowed the larger hard part with ease. felt like a rich man sitting on that thing and yes it does have a place for a beer to sit. waited until i was done to drink a glass of red wine then took a bath to get all the dust and chaff of me. that thing has power. its like a drag racer if i wanted it to be. will still use the walk behind honda for close trimming but my legs wont be a problem anymore. better living through chemistry and machines.

Strong Eagle, tell us more about your new toy, I mean mower. What make it is, HP, cutting width, etc. Steering wheel or Zero Turn? I used a Cub Cadet steering wheel type until I developed a neck and shoulder problem. My son in law sells Kubota so he bought the Cub from me to use at the lake and gave me a whale of a deal on the Kubota Kommander. I had to mortgage my wife & first born to get it, but at least my neck and shoulder don't hurt after I finish mowing.

42 width cut, 18 and a 1/2 horse power. every thing is easy to adjust. got so much power that you have to be careful when you take off as its like a drag racer. on sale at sears for about 1500 dollars and during the winter when not on sale 2000. its all i need and more. man oh man is it going to save where and tear on my old body. their comes a time in every mans life that he has to admit he cant do it all like he used to. this summer was my admitting that. its a husquvarna, i think thats how you spell it. has a briggs and straten motor. i will take care of it and it will last. the blade raises and lowers very easy and it will really cut close if you want. from now on the huge yard i have will always be cut on time.

The mowers today and their motors have really improved. Briggs, Clinton, Power Products, LawnBoy and so on. The (4 cycle) used the spoon splash oiling systems while the (2 cycle) mixed the oil and gas. Like the auto industry and how Honda got involved with their cars have now added to their sales with cycles and now outdoor power equipment (Honda small motors being offered on just about everything). When getting involved in the small engine business (improving their design ever few years), while the old stand-bye Briggs and a few others are still using the "spoon splash oiling system" that's decades old. Honda has gone a direction like the auto industry with an oil pump system, which has improved the running in different temps. and adding longer life to their motors. The mower manufacturers now offer Briggs and a few brands and Honda motors on their equipment. Interesting.

That mower is sold locally at Lowe's and a couple other places that I'm aware of. My running buddy bought one a couple months ago and really likes it so far. His replaced an 18yo JD with a worn out deck. My CC had an 18HP(?) Briggs Vanguard that never me any trouble except that I did have replace a Stator on it when it was about 5 years old. The mower & engine are still going strong at the lake house and if I'm not bad wrong it's around 16 years old.

I have had a riding mower, actually wore one out, for the last 20 years. Without it the job just wouldn't get done. Got about an acre to cut and a pusher, or even one that moves itself just doesn't cut it. Glad you finally got something to make your life a lot easier.
