I've used Evapo-rust with great results. Just don't let it touch any gun blue it will remove it.

Oh no! It will cause more rust.
I regularly use vinegar to “age” parts needing a rusted / pitted look. Let the part soak in cider and rust. Clean an burnish. Repeat if necessary.
But no cider for rust removal.

I soak old files in vinegar to clean / rejuvenate them, remove light rust. Works for me.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I removed rust from a motorcycle gas tank several years ago with the vinegar. It came out very nice. Different metal tho. I am concerned about the finish and so will think it over.

I have heard evapo-rust is the way to go, but I haven’t found any to try yet. So I use 0000 steal wool on a used brush with a little oil. Takes a while, but I have saved more than 1 barrel this way.

If you use vinegar it will have to be neutralized with a baking soda and water solution.
