Well
Going down the rabbit hole.
Building a smokeless in 45 caliber on a savage axis action.
I've been playing with the savage platform quite a bit the last few years.
This is going to be a budget build to see if this is even for me.
I went with the axis donor in 6.5 cm
I got the gun at academy for 430
I'll repurpose the barrel for a 6.5 cm striker build.
Will repurpose the magazine for a better easier for her for my misses 243 model 10 short action.
So the action cost very little when you subtract those costs. That I had to purchase any way.
Went with a prb system. Cecil was very helpful.20231004_145243.jpg20231004_144913.jpg
So far the action barrel bolt sleeve and bolt handle have arrived.
Broke the savage down yesterday.
With the correct tools it takes 20 minutes to pull it down
Rebuilt the bolt and set heads pace today
Barrel action now completed.

20231004_153755.jpgTimed up my muzzle brake.

Getting closer to a range day.
Trigger, bolt lift kit, egw 20 moa rail arrived today.
It's like Christmas every day with the delivery driver being santa..Santa...
Having so much fun with this build.
It's been years since I've been so engaged in a shooting sport.

Here is a sneak peak at what it will look like.
It's in the factory stock the donor came with and the cheap scope it came with.
I don't hate the Bushnell it may go on one of my other smokers. Has an interesting reticle that may work .
It could be shot as it sits.
In this configuration I've got around 1500 in it20231004_165002.jpg

The new stock is being built at boyds .
I've chosen an arken ep5 5-25 ×56 /to go on top.
That will run it up to around 2500.
It's a budget build bolt action with all new parts.
I could have gone with an encore barrel and I may yet but I wanted a bolt gun so all my hunting guns had familiarity across the spectrum.

I'm so intrigued by these smokeless bolt guns. I need to watch some videos on how they work. That part is still a mystery for me.

But it looks awesome. I hope to have something similar to that someday.

I have been threatening myself for years to build one.
Finally got to it. Actually building 2 . My buddy is piggy backing on this build just as easy to build 2 as one.
Once the machines are set up it's easy to run another one.

If you can imagine the barrel is plugged ahead of the bolt.
The bolt caries a primmer module.
Once you load the powder and bullet you prime thru the port close the action and fire.
I liked the axis because you can work the bolt with the safety fully engaged.
It's either on or off.
On the 10 I always find myself questioning if the safety is half way or off. Three positions
Only way to know is test the trigger.
Not what I want to do with a charged firearm.

I'm in awe. Nice looking build. I'm impressed. Looks very clean as it sits. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Your build got me looking into a smokeless build of my own. With the wife and I are both in between jobs (family business sold) she'd be less then happy if went something as involved as that build. Plus I'm pretty new to tinkering with firearms and lack the cool toys to pull it off. So a CVA scout in 45-70 will have to suffice for my first smokeless. Local gunsmith should be able to handle putting in a Hankins breech plug for me.

I was going to go down that road but could not locate a scout.
I could have installed the plug not much to it.
5/8 18 I'd threads and a counter bore to set head space.
Alot of guys just use a tap in thr lathe from what I understand.

Just so happens my wholesale outlet got a batch of blued scouts in
Not what I really wanted but I bought a couple. Really wanted the stainless steel ones.
One for my sons birthday and one for me.....
I bet those will be a kicker as light as they end up being.

Shooting the wings off the Flys 🪰 now. Looks like it shoots as good as it looks. Nice trigger work... Even if I had a rifle that would shoot that well I shake around to much. Or maybe I just need to use something other then a plastic table and my hunters butt pad. And you picked up two scouts. Nice. If you don't like the bluing give em a good camo paint job.

I should know this but are you using a small or large shank action?

have you tested long-range accuracy with the final setup?
I hunted with it last year and had sub moa at 100 yards.
I haven't shot it much since hunting season ended..been working on other projects.
Built a couple CVAs and a Remingto 16 twist.
Those have been sucking the time and resources.
I will get back to it soon.though with my sabot testing in 45 caliber
