Old Stumpy was a legend around these here parts, and many a hunter had tried to outwit him. He was so big that he could not jump over a fence anymore. He just smashed them down as we went along his way. He had antlers that would rival the biggest elk, and as thick as your arm at the base. Last count was he had over 100 points; some over 2 feet in length, and would probably score 1000 on the Boone and Crockett Scale. He was estimated to weigh well over 500 pounds and reported to be over 20 years old.

His body was so big his legs looked like they were only foot long stumps, (hence how he got his name, Old Stumpy). His travels were well known throughout these parts and recorded by the rubs that he left behind, on what else...telephone poles.

Yes, telephone poles. This old boy used to rub 'em and he must of enjoyed it considering the way he wore 'em down, (kept the power company busy - job security, you know). Old Stumpy could never be found during hunting season though many had tried. Some said he was just a ghost, others said that he died of old age, only to emerge afterwards to prove he had somehow won again. Well as they say, here's the rest of the story.

'Twas the day before deer season was to come to an end
I loaded up Ol' Trusty, (10ML II), and called my best friend.

I said Ol' Stumpy's been spotted, somewhere near the old clear cut
We'll have to hurry fast or this jig will be up.

With a 45 grain charge of AA5744, and a 250 XTP w/ MMP Sabot
Carefully rammed down the bore.

I held Ol' Trusty tight and as I ran out the back door
Jumped into my truck and put the pedal to the floor.

A 209 Winchester primer was to bring up the rear
With a Bushnell Elite 4200 on top, I had nothing to fear.

I stopped the old truck and started to peer
Just hoping by chance that Ole Stumpy was near.

Ole Stumpy was spotted, man was he big!!!
I've got to hold steady or grunt like a pig, (brings 'em in closer sometimes).

As I held the crosshairs on this Ol' Majestic Giant
He stood rock solid, almost defiant.

As the accutrigger released the firing pin in Ol' Trusty's bolt
I heard a big boom and he jumped with a jolt.

He couldn't have went far as my shot rang out true
Now all that's left is to track him through Long's Slough.

When I finally walked up to where this Old Monarch had fell
I new that someday this legend I'd tell.

As I gazed upon him to my shocking surprise
He just disappeared, right there, right before my own eyes.

Old Stumpy's Won Again!
