awesome! Its cool when you can see stock damage in the original pictures and compare it to the rifle. Looks like at one time the original lock was to small and was held in place by tacks.

Right -  You can see how the gun aged as time went on and the damage to the stock progressed. It ended up losing part of the forestock(after a restock they said) so he tied it together with a rawhide strip. That rifle had a pretty wild life with Mr Kinman.

There was an article in Muzzle Blasts a few months ago about Seth Kinman. Very interesting.

That rifle was probably used up to the last day it was "in service".  The condition hasn't changed much based on photos and documentary. If we found one that was similar today, there would be strong advice against attempting to actually fire it. Also, a rifle with that amount of repair, damage and inconsistency in stocking would be dubbed "incapable"  of accuracy by today's opinion jockey's. Apparently it worked just fine like that and potentially would continue to do so.
