I’ve been shooting my traditions sporter mag 209 rifle a bit and after having some issues with the primer not lighting the powder I’ve taken out what I though was the breech plug which is in the picture, but once this is out I don’t have complete access to the barrel. Is what I took out just an adapter?

Yes, that's it. Your muzzleloader is very similar to my traditions BuckHunter. They are good shooters but are somewhat of a pain to disassemble.

Breach plug back of barrel. Got to clean regularly. I clean mine about every 10 shots.
