This was a beautiful morning to be in the woods. I saw a total of 12 deer 3 were bucks 1 spike that was still in velvet, a 4 pt and a decent 110 class 8 pt but not what I was looking for. This was the most deer I have ever seen on opening day of bow season. All these deer were in and around a Impeial whitetail clover food plot, and all were within 25 yards. What a great way to start off a year. Laker

Today was bow opener in Iowa as well. Saw 3 does, button buck and 6" spike.

Had a chance to use my Bushnell Elite 1500 Rangefinder. I used it preseason as well during some scouting expeditons. Let me tell you that thing is awesome in almost every way! 7x26, fully multicoated, waterproof, 19mm of eye relief, adjustable diopter with screw out eye cup and 9V to boot. Ranges to 1500 yards reflective, deer no problem to 500 yards. Scan, bullseye and brush modes are truely remarkable. I was able to look through the branches of an oak tree 100 yards away, to range a deer in the feild at 232 yards! --and it did it easily and with the same reading each of the half dozen times I would push the button. This beats all the others I've tried including the Leica 900--hands down.

The Elite 1500 rangefinder does have a lighted screen, however the light comes from the sides of the screen and in extreme low light situations when you can just barely see, the light overpowers your veiw. Even at that, this rangefinder, due to it's fully multicoated optics and 26mm objective looks longer into the evening than most. I love this rangefinder.

Anyway, I had a great time this a.m. (very preoccupied with toys)

Glad that you guys had a chance to enjoy the opener.

Mine was not so good, but it was not too bad either. I did see a few deer just not like I would have liked to see them.

I started the day by working with some concrete at my uncles. Saw a nice 8 pt still partialy in velvet in his front yard when my father and I pulled in his driveway at 7:00 AM. What of his antlers was not velvet was a nice shiney blood red so I know that he just started rubbing this morning. All I could think after that was how bad I wished that I was in the woods somewhere.

After we finished the concrete I came home got cleaned up and headed for a plot of woods that I wanted to scout/hunt, and maybe put up a stand. Unknown to me this land had been sold recently and I was escorted off the land at gunpoint by the new owner. I guess thats sometimes happens when you just assume that you still have permission to hunt an area, and do not at least speak to the landowner for a few years. I was not too upset about being escorted off of the land however I was mad at myself for not at least calling Gerald and telling him I was going out there. He would have told me that he sold the place 3 months ago if I had just called.

It was approx 4:00 PM when I got back to my truck, so I drove a few miles up the road to some state land that I thaught I would scout/hunt since I was in the area anyway. There was a guy from Indy attempting to load a spike into his truck at the parking area. I've never seen anyboy struggle with loading a 110lb-115lb deer the way this guy was struggling, so I was nice and helped him get the little thing loaded. When I asked where he killed the deer he told me that it was drinking water from the pond 300 yards down the fire lane. :x :x That was the main area that I wanted to check out, so I decided that since he had been in there all day, taken that small buck, and left a gut pile in that area that I would just stay out of that area until at least some evening mid week after the bobcats and coyotes have the gut pile cleaned up.

After that I just drove to my parents farm. It was exactly 5:00PM when I arrived there. I walked to my feed plot and just sat in a brush pile not seeing or hearing anything. I expected to at least get a shot at a turkey. Not seeing a deer was no surprise since I know how few deer are in the area, but I expected to bag me a bird sitting there on the opening day of the 1st ever fall turkey season we have had in Indiana.

With any luck things will go better for me tomorrow. Actualy I know that they will as log as I crawl out of bed in the morning early enough to go to the woods. Weather or not I see any animals makes no difference as long as I get to the woods early enough to watch a sunrise it will make it a better day than today was.

Hey Laker thanks for pointin me in the right direction saw a few deer no big bucks and to warm for a meat kill. Joe Name

High tech Redneck

   " Escorted off the land at gunpoint"

That is hilarious Junior, I just love it, What did you do now anyway, get caught sneakin on Crane again? You really are a Redneck, guess that is why I like you so much, hahahaha

Actualy I was several miles away from Crane. I also highly doubt that this guy had the balls to use that shotgun on me if I had gotten out of hand with him. You should have seen how bad he was shaking when he pointed it towards me. I almost started laughing at him, but I knew that I should not do that. You never know what somebody like that will do. I just walked to my truck with him at my heals after we had the short conversation that made me realize that he was the new landowner, and that I was trespassing. Probably trespassing a little too close to his marijuana patch since I know he was not squirrel, or turkey hunting in that area. It's way too swampy to hunt anything except deer.

Glad you did not laugh at him Junior, guy that shaky probably would have dropped the hammer.
