My youngest daughter loves this story.
Here in florida there is a week between archery and ML season where there is no hunting or at least it used to be that way.
I had pawn shop ML (side lock percussion) painted camo 50 cal,no idea who made it.
I was scouting for some new stand sites way back in booger swamp,I was on an overgrown logging road that hadn't seen traffic in many years,I hear noise in the woods so I squat down in the road, through the woods comes a piglett, then another and many more shortly after momma came to the road and she saw me or smelled me im not sure, she escorted her babies accross and then made a noise I have never heard before, made whats left of my hair stand up,they went on and so did I,about that time I hear what sounds like a stampeed comming at me but it's so thick I cant see, then about 75 yards in front of me here comes daddy on a dead run,
I cocked the hammer and fired, well, you all know what happens when you fire, I couldn't see so I dropped the rifle and climmed a small pine and had to stay there a few untill he went on.I never harmed a hair on him but he left a lasting impression on me.
My girl laughs at me about it but to me it was no laughing matter.
I have taken quite a few hogs since then but I have the utmost respect for that animal.

A very good personal experience. Glad that you are OK.

Hogs have a distress signal that brings the hog cavalry to their rescue. Was sitting in a tree stand in deer season and heard a pig squealing like mad. The mom hog and six pigs that weighed about 40 pounds each came into view, pursued by a bobcat that tried to grab tail end Charlie. Mom turned and went after the bobcat.

A boar weighing about 300 pounds came out of no where without a sound and tossed that cat about 30 feet into the air. When the cat hit the ground it did not move.

I got down and examined that cat. Its chest was crushed and ripped open.

From all I have read and heard about hog hunting, it sounds like fun but there is a degree of danger in it for sure. I have not had the pleasure of hunting wild hogs yet.

Having spent far more time then I like to admit around domestic hogs, I can tell you for a fact ... if they want a piece of you, they will do everything in their power to get it. A funny thing happened to me one night.

In my younger years I drove a livestock truck making deliveries to different farms and picking up at feed lots and livestock sales barns, animals these different farmers purchased. One night I went into this livestock sales barn to pick up around twenty calves. Being very dark, I wandered around in there looking for a light switch so I could see.

I then saw a small red light on what I thought was a post. Light switch I thought, and headed that way. Well there was a light switch there but when I turned it on, I discovered I was in the middle of a pen with the largest boar hog I had ever seen in my life.

Well I flipped on the light and must have ruined that hogs beauty sleep (and he needed a lot of it) and up he come. I then proceeded to show up every Olympic high jumper in the world as I cleared a fence and ran down the center loading isle (having left his gate open by accident).

Finally before me I saw what I needed. The steel weigh scale. With that hog in hot pursuit, I ran straight for it and jumped all the way on top of it. He ran in it under me, I slammed the door shut and locked him in that steel cage. And I decided that was where he was going to stay. He weighed in at almost 600 pounds. I think it was 583 pounds or something like that. His tusks alone were a couple pounds I am sure.

After my heart stopped racing, I got a drink of water, picked up my calves, and left a note on the front door of the barn before I left, explaining why the boar was out of the pen ...

If a big wild one was charging after me.. you can bet I would get up a tree too...

I got goose bumps as I read your stories and my dumb @$$ just booked a hog hunt in central florida with crossbow.
And I think yall are right,If they want you, theyll get ya.

Florida hogs

 Better keep that crossbow close we got some mean-assed hogs down here

hog Hunt

Saman, make a good shot. My friend went w/ his Xbow last year for a Boar, and well I think he is still in the tree!

I tell you- I hunt by myself and I feel like a wimp at times because I'm so afraid of them. I've been walking out of the woods several times the past few months and came across a pack of them and they give off this "bark" warning call. That is the very reason why my glock is in hand while I'm walking- I aim a few feet in their direction and fire at the ground. I also try to make a lot of noise walking to ward them off...

It's scarey to here them less than 50 feet from you in the pitch black!

I couldn't not imagine comming across that 1,000 pounder let alone the 1,800 pounder!!

Most animals like deer, and even bear hear someone coming and they are gone. But it sounds like a troop of hogs are kind of like the bully of the woods. You get in their way and they are going to go on the offensive. It sure makes hunting them sound interesting but I think I would bring a revolver as back up..
