Is there a big difference in trajectory with the 40 cal hornady 200 gr sst and the 452 250 grain set? Do they perform pretty much the same on game?
I never had a failure with the 50 cal hornaday tipped jobs out of my 54 either but did with a 45 cal out of a 50 mz . Tracked that buck for 31/2 Miles !!!!!! I STILL cant believe he made it that far !!!!! Pretty good hit i thought but only 1 lung on a quartering away shot was hit . Wind must have blew me off course more than i figured , but bullet didnt expand either . That was one hell of a lot of work to find him before the yotes did !!!!!! Lessons learned !!!!!! Both of them , watch that wind ALOT BETTER and no more Shockwaves !!!!! Load was 115gr of pyrodex select with 300gr shockwave @ about 95 to 100yds . Gun loved that load & had about a 1" group @100yds.I've killed just under 50 deer with all varieties of the SST, Shockwave, FTX bullets. 200 grain .40's in both .45 and .50 cals, rifles and pistol. 250 grain . 452 in saboted .50 cals, saboted 20ga slugs, .450 Bushmaster, sabotless .45 cal. 265 grain .430 in saboted .50 cal. 300 grain in saboted .50 cal and sabotless .45 cal.
The G1 BC's.
G1 BC - 200 Gr .400" - 0.265
G1 BC - 250 Gr .452" - 0.240
G1 BC - 300 Gr .452" - 0.250
Never once had one "pencil" through, or "grenade" like tales are told. All but one passed through, and ALL showed definite signs of expansion. The furthest a deer ever traveled after the shot was 60 yards. ZERO deer were lost, and all bullets were double lungs and or heart shots.
The only one that I recovered, is the .40 cal 200 gr, after passing through both front shoulders and stopped under the hide on the off side shoulder. Adult deer at 115 yards, with Black Mag'3 back in the early 2000's. So, it actually passed through all but one layer of skin and hair.
This is the actual recovered bullet.

Here is my first .50 cal Optima Pistol kill that I documented back in 2011. 80 grains by VOLUME Blackhorn 209 under the 200 gr Shockwave @ 1510 FPS 10 feet from the muzzle.
3 shot group @ 50 yards.

60 yard shot, traveled 25 yards and was deader than a doornail when he flipped over backwards.
Blood trail. Not needed, but appreciated.

Disclaimer: I do not shoot pellets, nor any of the Low Drag, EZ glide/slide sabots. All were shot with at least 80 grains (pistol) and not more than 120 grains (most 90 to110 grains) by VOLUME of Black Mag'3, Triple Se7en, Blackhorn 209 loose powders between 15 and 115 yards. Others with Hornady 20ga 250 gr SST saboted slugs or Hornady Black .450 Bushmaster 250 grain FTX out to 125 yards. I don't take low percentage or Hail Mary shots, and if I can't be 99.99% certain I can get it in the boiler room, I don't take the shot. Simple as that!
The 250gr SST BC is pretty inflated. The 200gr SST is much closer to REAL WORLD BC and its sectional density is a little better than a 250gr SST.
