Yeah, the single shot 20 Gauges. My cousin had one also. I borrowed it as a kid for the extra power. Kicked like a mule. I sometime see single shot 12 gauges in a local auction and wonder if I should try one. But the memory of that 20 gauge has held me back for many years.

Those H&R shotguns kick like a Missouri mule on steroids !!! No so with some others !!!
Anytime you see a butt stock angled down you can bet it'll kick . Thats just how it is !!! Any kick from Any gauge will be exagerated when this is what you got instead of something without all that "angle" . I have no idea why many have used that type of design for years and years . It needs to Go !!!
Probably for a 20 a Limbsaver pad would be a nice set-up for your girl if you dont get her a Gas Operated autoloader , ie 1100 Reminton for example . Mine is only 6lb too . A 20ga SKB XL900 or XL300 are Fantastic guns too and slug barrels are available out of Nebraska too . I can take 5 3"Federal Tru-balls out of the box and put them thru that box @100yds with it . Smoothbore and all !!! It Wont rust either !!! Exceptional gun and can often be found used for a really good deal too !!! Its made in Japan and we WISH we made guns that Nice !!!!!!!!! No joke . Ithaca also imported them . A recoil spring operated autoloader is gonna kick some but a Franchi 48 is under 6lbs . Put a pad on those too . I dont know of any that are slug barrels though as accuracy and slugs are NOT good with this type . Personally i dont care for a pump . But an 870 Rem is hard to beat if thats what she wants . Just put the Limbsaver on it or recoil wont be tolerated too well . Many are also 3" capable as well .

I picked up a 20 gauge Smith and Wesson 1000 so long ago I don't remember where I got it. Its a semi auto. Almost no recoil at all. Its gas operated. I shoot left handed so I do get to watch the shell swing out of the chamber just in front of my eyes. LOL. I have a couple of Browning B2000 in 20 gauge on the shelf. I bought them 35 years ago. I think they are spring operated and I do not like them. Id love an 870 in a 20 but never owned one. Ive been watching auctions and they are usually 12s or youth model 20s.

An 870 or 1100 youth gun is NICE with a buttstock change !!!

I grew up shooting a single shot 12 gauge, from about age 10. The kick has never been something I was afraid of. I now have a Remington 1100, but when I’m shooting clays I much prefer the faster single shot. I can hit those things before they get 25’ out of the thrower. I would choose a single shot 20 gauge for a girl, or a small boy.

It’s too bad really that the 410 hasn’t been explored as a viable deer gun.
A fully rifled, floated, bedded barrel combined with today’s slug technology could be a great gun.
A 410 White muzzleloader will handle Whitetails just fine.
410 slug gun would be quick handling, easy to carry, & low recoil.

I don't know if they make one but an H&R UltraSlug in .410 is something i would consider buying. I missed out on a couple in 20ga.

To my knowledge they don’t but it could be a great platform

I wouldn't use them for deer, unless I was starving, it was the only choice, and ONLY with 1/4th oz Brenneke Slugs under 25 yards. Do not even think about using the 1/5th oz Remington, Federal, or Winchester Foster Rifled Slugs. They are too frangible.

Now .410 for turkey, ABSOLUTELY! With the new Tungsten Super Shot from Federal and Apex, along with a .410 CVA Scout Turkey with Jebs extended choke, they are easily 40 yard capable. Same with the Savage/Stevens 301 turkey gun using the TSS loads. Tungsten Super Shot is 56% denser than lead, so #9 shot is as heavy as #6 in lead, and hard enough to blow through a sheet of steel roofing at 40 yards. The #9 shot also gives you twice as many as #6, hits harder and penetrates deeper. The .410 turkey guns are all the craze these days. Been eyeballing a couple myself.

A less expensive alternative. Stevens by Savage 301 turkey. Can be had for $150 - $200.

It will only let you post 5 videos per post.

More expensive choices

Mossberg

semi-auto 2020

pump 2019

Remington

Another choice in a less expensive semi-auto.

TriStar. Go to 10:20 for 40 yard pattern and steel roofing shot after that.

I still believe that as I said before with today’s slug technology combined with current powders, used in a dedicated deer gun you could easily have a very efficient deer killer. Possibly a good 26-30 cal bullet in a sabot?

I heard the same claims that my 40 cal smokeless should never be used on deer too.

Does the right stuff exist today for a 410 slug gun? No, but someday maybe.

Absolutely!

Rifle the barrels, and load a good "BULLET", not a hollowed out soft lead Foster Slug.

Those Brenneke Slugs are the best option right now in a .410. The manufactures just aren't ready to spend all that money on a .410 deer gun, when most states are allowing straight walled cartridge rifles in the old slug zones.

A .450 Bushmaster or .350 Legend will Trump any .410 slug technology that anyone could ever dream up. And they can do it for a fraction of the cost.

Those .410 TSS Turkey Loads are over $5 per shot, and the Slugs would be too, if ever developed.

I killed 5 deer with a .410. I went through a pile of slugs to find a good shooting one. I kept my shots close and tried to get a deer that was very relaxed. Ill admit there are limitations with a .410. But it can be done with care.

Shotshell reloading is super easy and inexpensive. Once you find the right bullet you can easily work up a great load for the gun. I got into shotshell reloading to make something that compared to the Hornady sst for less $.
