Was having a talk with a friend about cleaning muzzle loaders.

How many use water. How many don't use water.

Just intrested in hearing others' responses

Thanks As always, Greg

I use Blackhorn 209 so i dont use water based cleaners....No water reduces the chance of rust. Ive never had a CF solvent cause rust.

I use water with t7, and Montana Extreme? solvent with bh209. And a steamer for the small bits and places on both. Steamer helps me clean my ROA , and nipples and breech plugs on everything. Then Barricade or Remington after drying thoroughly

With no breech to flush out as the breech plug is easily removed in an in-line.. who needs water.?

I shoot real black or Pyrodex only. I use water and have never had an issue in over 20 years.
I do use windex or a home brew solution for field cleaning but water is my primary.

I use it depending on the gun. I hate it though. Been having a flash rust issue latley.

I personally used to use water on my first rifles. On my Mk and any others I have owned I clean with the solvents I use for my hunting rifles. the only thing now that sees water is the breech plug. In time I just couldn't see exposing to water where rust is a issue with ML as it is.

Drop a piece of steel in water and one in Hoppes #9. Lets see which rusts first. ;)

Hoppes Elite and Hoppes for BP are water based BTW. Most subs and real black will need a water based cleaner. BH209 does not.

# 13 bore cleaner with 777 always comes out spotless

For T7 and Swiss I like to use M.A.P. I am not a fan of using water.
For BH209 I use the same oil based products used to clean my centerfire rifles.

I am only speaking to inlines here, but I have moved to a very simple and easy method of cleaning the bore when shooting T7 or BH.

Montana BH solvent on my BH rifles. Dawn dish washing liquid and hot water on my Whites. Whites tend to get black powder residue everywhere. Mine get total disassembly washed with water as hot as I can stand and blown out with high pressure air. Oil through out with lighter fluid to the trigger.

I use water and a copper brush. Pass through until no dirt on cloth patch. To finish I get a teapot of hot water, wrap the barrel in cloth because it will get hot. Pure the water down the barrel until its nice and hot. (dont touch it) A few more patches to dry it out and now that its hot any remaining water will evaporate quickly. The patches after the hot water usually have just a very fine trace of dirt. While the barrel is still warm I run a patch with a small amount of grease down it. Until Im sure the inside of the barrel is thinly coated. Been doing it for 35 years and it works for me.
