I just got back from trying a couple of loads. My only goal was to feel the recoil. I'll develop an accurate load later. Although what I saw today was accurate. I alternated the loads so I could feel the difference better.

Ok, you have to guess which of these two loads had more felt recoil for me. Gun is a 6 1/4lb Wolf with peep sight. Powder is BH 209. I'll try Goex later.

Powerbelt Aerolite 300gr........75gr

NoExcuses 420gr..........55gr

Which one is harder?
Have never shot or handled either.
Just know from experience that harder bullets have more felt recoil, even when 200gr lighter.
I think soft lead absorbs some of the recoil as it expands easier/quicker to fill the grooves vs harder bullets.

The way Powerbelts shatter it seems it would be harder than the NoExcuses which never shatter. However, the skirt on the Powerbelt absorbs some of it.

I was kind of surprised at how they both felt. I thought the extra weight in the NoExcuse would more than make up for the extra powder in the Powerbelt load. The Powerbelt was a tighter fit and the NoExcuse was lubed. That might matter too.

I don't have a lot of experience shooting conicals but I do have some. My experience matches yours. 80 grains BH209 with a 400+ grain conical isn't terrible. From a recoil standpoint I would prefer to shoot the conical over a 300 gr. saboted bullet and 110 gr. BH209.

My old bones can't handle your loads anymore. Those should have a pretty good poke in a light gun.

A lot has to do with the velocity differences between the two different bullets, because of different charge weights.
All one has to do is know the velocity, or guess it close enough, then put that data into a recoil calculator ;)

I did and it came out to 55gr of BH with the 420gr NoExcuses at my ranges will kill anything I hunt and not beat me up. So, i'm going with it.

I don't know exactly what the BC is. I went with 0.190. I'm also guessing at the MV. I should be good to 100yds. More than long enough in my timber hunting. To be fair to the game i'm going to use a scope too. I don't like them but it is nice to have a clear sight picture. The extra weight helps with recoil too. I got a good deal on a Nikon Buckmaster scope. It's a 3x9x40 and i'll sight in and hunt with it on 3x all the time.

So, i'm kind of all set now. That's all for the help.

I decided to use the Aerolite 300gr instead. It will be fine with a light powder load. (70gr) Just hunting for a muley buck.

Curiosity got the best of me. I have to see if they'll work.

I guess my curiosity about PB's will go unanswered. I just can't bring myself to use them. I'm going to pass on deer from now on too. My unit is a CWD unit now and I don't want to deal with cutting a buck head off and getting it inspected. Bear hunting is lousy around here too. So, a cow elk will be it from now on. The good part is I can get a cow tag every year with no points. So, no worries about the draw anymore.

I just talked to Dave at NoExcuses and he thinks 60gr of BH with the 420gr bullet will work ok for a cow. I'll start working with it at the range. Maybe I can get it to 65gr. I added some foam to the comb to raise it for the scope. Maybe it will feel softer to shoot.

Ok, i'm set. I promise no more changes. A tasty cow with a good bullet.

If you want to see variables in recoil you should buy/borrow /(STEAL?) some BP in 1 1/2/2/and 3F and anyone who uses all 3 will tell you 1 1/2 F (I use OE ) is like a push ,2F a little sharper and 3F more so . At long range with cartridge/Breach or muzzle loader I try for 1200-1275FPS and achieve that with 80 grains weighed, less with 2F and still less with 3F .So the point is to get a comfort level shooting you need a chrono and REAL BP

I used to shoot two cases of Swiss a year. That was sidelocks though. This is an inline and modern muzzleloader might as well use a modern powder. You can't get more modern than BH 209. It has many advantages over BP. Recoil is not one of them. I'll just deal with it to have the advantages.

Thanks for your post. I agree that BP is softer shooting but there's a reason for that. It's the most inefficient powder made. Although Swiss is much better than Goex. I never trusted OE to be a real BP. I think they snuck in some secret ingredient.

Guess might as well is good a reason as any ,thou I thought the goal was manageable recoil . I guess I"ll throw out my brand new case of OE 2F as I now know its inefficient /Ed
