About 15 years ago a hunter brought me a Knight Disc rifle with a ring and small bulge in the barrel about three inches from the muzzle. Cut four inches off and re-crowned the muzzle. The owner hunts every year with that rifle, claims it handles better.

Have you considered an old style Remington 700 ML, or a Ruger 77/50? They're both handy little carbine style rifles that'll getcha to 150 or 200 yards if needed, but handle in the woods of the Adirondacks like you read bout.

Need something really short/maneuverable carbine. Looking at a Traditions Buckstalker XT Youth model & cut/11° crown at 12". Looking at a BARSTE Field sport 4MOA Red Dot Reflex Sight. Max range max of 25 yards. In essence, a modern 'canoe gun'. Looking for .44 Mag/.45 Colt ballistics.
Curious if anyone has already gone down this path?
Cutting and crowning a muzzy barrel is no different than any other barrel. You just have to pay attention to the method of ram rod attachment. My ENCORE was easy as it had 2 ramrod attachment points and and the outer one got cut off leaving the inner one intact. Sometimes you have to move the ramrod attachment barrel to a new location by tapping another hole. Cutting the barrel actually made it more accurate. It groups 1 -1/2" @ 100 and 3" @ 200. It's super maneuverable in a treestand. The barrel is 20 inches.

I wonder if that was another example of an off center QLA, or whatever they called them.

If a guy could find one. I've been looking for a Ruger 77/50 for years and just can't get my hands on one

A quick & dirty PhotoChop of what I've got planned. The rear ring is where the Barste red dot scope would go. General concept.

WoW! Now THAT is a handy gun. Being a muzzle loader and not classified as a firearm I don' think there's any legal ramifications. Is that 14 inches? I don't know about the velocity loss but a 44 mag pistol will kill deer all day @ 1200 fps and I think you'll definitely have that. The only concern I would have is you rifling twist. Reducing your velocity will also reduce the spin and therefore the stabilizing of the bullet. Proper rifling twist is driven by the length of the bullet rather than weight. You may be limited to short squat bullets to get you past 50 yds without yawing. GOOD LUCK!
PS: I reread your original post and see you're cutting to 12" and looking to reach out only 25 yards. At that range any bullet will work and will kill anything you'll be shooting at from a canoe. GOOD HUNTING!

Just the info I needed.
I got the following numbers from a now deleted article "Barrel Length vs Muzzle Velocity" starting with a 30-Inch Barreled CVA .50 Caliber Accura V2 LR, Harvester Muzzleloading saboted .451" diameter 300-grain Scorpion PT Gold bullets, and BH 209 powder. Barrel was shortened in 2-inch increments and MVs measured at the same ambient temperature.

30 Inch Barrel

Sorry the tests weren't run with any other powders. I'd have liked to see those results too.

T/C Black Diamond 12.5 in barrel, gun is 32 in long, very accurate at 60-75 yds as far as Ive shot it. Killed one huge doe with it at about 40 yds, 240 gr XTP, green sabot. It also has a pistol stock I made from the walnut stock that was on it. Also have a Knight Disc Extreme .52 cal with 21 in barrel very accurate at 100 yds with 110 gr BH209 and 325 gr FTX /grey sabot.20230303_221542.jpg
