Well I got out yesterday to shoot a little. Was hoping to do more than I did, but it was awful hot and muggy and then the rain came. My son and daughter were with me, we shot some other guns as well...just ran out of time to tinker as much as I wanted with the ML.

Took my .45 Disc Elite, set up a target at 100yds, and 150yds. Was hoping to shoot 200 also, maybe next time.

I shot the first target at 100yds. First shot from a clean barrel was a flyer. I kinda expected that based on what everyone has always said. This is only the 2nd time I've shot this rifle, last time I sighted it in...then shot some groups, so the first shot on a clean barrel was who knows.

My 3 shot group was right at 1" using 100gr BH, 200gr shockwaves w/supplied sabot, and W209 primer. I was very happy with that. I'm not the greatest shot by any means and honestly I don't shoot enough each year to be consistent. I used to shoot alot and was much better, but over the last 10yrs or so my shooting time has gone way down. Hope to eventually get it back up.

I let my son shoot the 150yd target...he's better than me anyhow. :D
The taped holes on the target was from some other shooting we were doing, I was too lazy to walk out and change the target. Guess I should have. His 3 shots were right at 1 3/8" using the same load. I doubt I could have shot that well.

It appears that the 150 group is about 1.5" lower than the 100. Both need to come up a smidge I guess, and maybe a tick over to the right. I didn't adjust at all yesterday. I like how flat it shoots :D Anyone have an idea what the MV might be? I'm guessing over 2000fps. Not sure what my trajectory would be out to 200...probably another 3-4" low maybe? Seems to me once I bring it up a hair, I might have a 200yd gun just point and shoot.

I'll try 200yds next time, not sure if I'll try more powder or not. I know most folks seem to like 110-120, but honestly with the scope I have on there the eye relief is only a little over 3" on 9x, and its already coming real close. I'm not used to shooting that much powder I guess, my normal loads in my other guns are with pyrodex, typically around 100gr volume. I don't know how much more kick the BH has, but it seems it certainly has some. If I was going to consistently shoot heavier loads, I'd change the scope to something with a little more eye relief.

Overall, I'm super happy with this rifle. Primers were perfectly clean, loaded easy and consistently shot after shot. Need to get some 195 Barnes to try out, those will be my hunting bullet I believe. Now if we can get the first shot flyer squared away, this one will be good to go! :yeah:

Wow. That's some fine shooting.

Those SSTs fly nice.

They certainly fly well. Hoping the Barnes do as well.
My son is definitely a much better shot than me. He's 17 and has a natural ability that I don't have. It was miserable between the hot sticky weather, rain showers on and off, and bugs...after he finished up we called it a day. Then the heavy rain came about 10 mins later, so it worked out just right! :D

I'm hoping your "first shot flyer remedy" is repeatable. :yeah:

Re: Range Session

That is fine shooting, hardly 'handicapped' at all for deer hunting, compared to a centerfire rifle. :D

I used my chrony with 110 grains of B209 and a 195 grain Barnes, averaged 2218 fps. The chrony was set just beyond blast range, 20' or so.

Re: Range Session

Looks real good. I too am amazed at the flat shooting of that rifle. Good job.

Re: Range Session

Nice shooting!

If the Barnes don't fly as well, try some Harvester smooth light blue sabots and knurl the bullet, made a difference in my Elite.

Re: Range Session

Nice shooting!! I see with BH your rifle is like mine with the first shot, Actually my Optima can be temperamental with the first two shots, so I foul the bore heavy before shooting targets.

Re: Range Session

Looking good Mike. I think the deer are in big trouble. :D

That .45 does shoot flat. 8)

Re: Range Session

BuckDoeHunter....thanks for the tip on the Barnes. :yeah:

I don't know if they are in big trouble or not Shawn. LOL. The gun probably shoots better than me. :D
I'll probably end up carrying my .54 MK and shooting them at 30-40yds with the bullets you made ....

Cayugad, this rifle is my first experience with BH209. I've always heard about the first shot flyers, and it appears I have that issue. I've never experienced that with my MK's and Pyrodex. I'll see what it does next time out. I'm also interested seeing how what LarryBud posted about a possible fix pans out. That would be a great thing if it works, lots of folks seem to have that problem.

The .54 is pretty cool. They hit like a hammer of Thor! 8) I plan to use it again this year too.

I plan to make some more later this summer. Might bump the BHN up just a tad from 5 to 6 or 7 like Idaho Rons. :D If I do I will let you know.

Re: Range Session

Very nice report Mike. Nothing wrong with your trigger pullin skills. Your son got those skills from somewhere. The first shot with my 50 Mountaineer and 110 grs. of BH209 was about always 2 inches out of the group on a cold clean barrel. What is interesting is my Knight Ultra-Lite puts them in the same hole clean or dirty.

Scott, I know where he got the skills... my dad. He's been a competitive shooter for the past 15yrs. Mainly handguns, but has also shot some long guns too. He shoots about 15-20k rounds a year...mostly handgun. He's very good. He's old but enjoys it and usually places in the $. He just finished 5 out of the $ at the Bianchi Cup a couple weeks ago, said he "stunk it up". I wish I could "stink it up" half as good as he can.

That's good news if your UL doesn't have a flyer. Now you make me want to buy a UL!
(Ok, that's a lie...I've wanted one ever since they came out! )

He better get into the $$ once in a while, for shooting 15-20K in rounds every years costs a-lot of money.

Oh, no doubt...even when you reload it costs. Alot of that is .22 so not so bad, but alot is .45 also. Lucky for him, he was smart enough to buy a ton of ammo long before the prices went up. He has tens of thousands of rounds competition ammo that he bought in bulk and got so cheap its crazy. He usually ends up in the money at most events he shoots in, which certainly helps offset the costs...but thats not why he shoots, just a bonus if it happens. He has probably 100 big ol trophies that he says will be my problem when he passes on.

His most recent thing (because of the cost of everything now) he had a custom pellet handgun built that is pretty much the exact same weight/size/trigger pull/sights, etc... as his main comp .22. So he shoots pellets into a trap in his basement for practice... and it gives him lots of realistic practice without having to go anywhere and burn up his live ammo, if he doesn't want to. The ol' man is pretty smart :yeah:

Nice shooting Mike :!: Those groups are really nice and tight. I would say those rifles with those loads are ready for deer season.

Ray........... :yeah:

Mike, that is some great shooting!! It's always good to see a gun that I've sold to someone come to life for them & shoot the way it should. Keep up the great shooting. I'm sure you'll have a 200 yard gun easily. I'm looking forward to seeing more reports from you

Thanks Greg. You said it shot well, I guess you weren't lying
Hopefully the Barnes will be similar.
