Rick sent more bullets to catch. These have a 0.15" hollow point instead of 0.125 hollow point.

The trap consists of carpet glued to 3/8" plywood, then six water jugs, then a thick phone book.

The range to the trap is/was 25 yard. First we tried to catch the bullet shot by a powder load of 50 grain Blackhorn. The bullet' speed at 25 yard impact was about 981 fps. The bullet went completely through the trap; wasn't caught. The bullet was found on the ground behind the horse, and wasn't deformed very much. Then the powder charge was increased to 64 grain Blackhorn, which produced a speed at 25 yard of about 1168 fps. This bullet was caught in the fourth water jug, and was nicely mushroomed.

whoa, what an impact. I think first test hole was too small and maybe not enough velocity

Personally I would say most of the difference was due to velocity. Just a WAG.

Thanks Ron, it looked like a nice day!
At 1168fps there is not much of the bullet body left, only the last band (look at the base - nearly perfect!). Can't help but wonder about the base when the HP does not open - almost like the water is rounding the base?

One would think that pure soft lead would open at 1000fps if not below and most likely leave more body intact, which would be OK as long as the nose opens up some.

Here are the 2 pins +1; 1/8"(left), the 0.150" (middle) and for comparison the .200" from my 52/500 mold (the last two being tapered). The next one for the 50/475 will be about 0.200", maybe not as deep.

Here's what's left of the body under the HP.

Also, it looks as if my 40gr BH209 load that I got from my LabRadar on my last shot may be good.
35gr W = 980 fps
40gr W = 1097 fps
45gr W = 1168 fps

1168fps is right in the ballpark for 50/70 performance level. Almost a carbon copy actually

Used the full 7/32" (0.218") reamed hole that I put in the Accurate mold. New pin 0.218" diameter into the bullet about 1/16", then funneled to nearly the length of the nose (total depth into the bullet 0.400").
