I am finding this site wonderful in terms of access to knowledge about muzzleloading. Not demeaning those who choose a more traditional approach, its stunning to me to learn a modern Savage rifle can be converted into a muzzleloader and gain a huge ballistics advantage. In that case, what are the best .40 caliber bullets for hunting, both ballistically, accuracy wise, and also for expansion at long range when velocity has been reduced significantly?

You need to take into consideration what your barrel twist rate is what what bullets you choose & the velocity that you intend to get is also critical in making the right bullet choice.
Are you asking about .40 bullet to bore, or .40/.45 sabot loads?
