Shot this young buck yesterday morning at about 10 am. Was sitting in a tree stand overlooking a trail when this 3 point buck came from behind on the left, walking fast. i made the Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa sound, the buck stopped and turned. i immediately fired; when the smoke cleared the buck was on the ground. Buck thrashed for about 30 seconds but was still breathing. Reloaded quickly, exited the stand and administered a coup de gras.

Distance: About 30 yards.

Rifle: .50 TC New Englander.
Powder: 90 grains of Grafs black powder.
Bullet: Patched round ball.
Patch lube: Frontiers.
Cap: Remington #11

It’s a good thing to get one on the ground. Congrats :dance2:.

Do them round balls "mushroom" on impact?

.50 and .54 caliber round balls typically mushroom to about the size of a nickel/quarter. The exit wound is visible in the photo. The entrance wound was just below the spine. The heart and lungs were not hit.

IMO: When put in the right place at shorter ranges, round balls kill as well as 150-180 grain bullets fired from a .30-06.
