Buck still has antlers!

I saw a decent 8pt buck yesterday morning in Hocking county Ohio. He looked to be a 2 1/2 year old. The antlers looked like they were great shape and something that you would see in late fall! Anyone else still seeing Bucks around this late?

I saw a 6 pointer yesterday with six does in the middle of a field around 4:30pm here in Easton PA. I was surprised to see that he still had them as well.

Here in NW Pa, I’m still seeing some with antlers in the fields. My Dad is reporting the same for northern OH.

Buck keeping their antlers thru April is not uncommon for younger bucks
Likely due to to more testosterone than the older ones. Much like us older goats!

Looking at the antlers on the buck in this picture, they are white looking to me and I'm guessing they are about to be shed. The 8pt buck that I saw Monday morning looked like a buck that you would see in late fall.

The testosterone in the buck is what triggers antlers to fall off. The older the buck, the higher the testosterone level so they fall off sooner. That's why almost every buck you see still carrying there antlers are young. I've seen 1.5 year old bucks still having there antlers when I was turkey hunting (end of April). I've also seen big mature bucks (5 years and older) drop antlers just after Christmas.

I started seeing bucks drop antlers in December, and I assume it’s due the drought.

I see an older mulie buck almost daily, he still has the velvet on his 4x3x25-26" rack.

Also have been watching six bull elk, four have dropped and when the other two do we will head for the back 80 to find them.

Helena Montana. My son killed a smallish 10-pointer (Eastern) with his '97 Camry yesterday before legal shooting light.

Actually, that buck ran into the side of his car as he drove by, so I guess it killed itself. One of the antlers flew off (at the base) and flew into the ditch, so it was just about ready to drop naturally.

Amazingly, the only damage was a cracked windshield, where the buck's head hit, and a $67 driver's side mirror.

This 1 1/2 year old still has his in NW Missouri. Last one I've seen still wearing antlers.

I had a buck in Michigan's thumb that had shed his antlers and was still chasing does just after Thanksgiving.

Glad your Son was OK! This happened this fall in MD and as the story goes the lady was OK as well but DAMN just goes to show!
