Just sitting here watching the video and then read through the stuff. Very cool! I'd like to take a look at this place one day. Im less than 80 miles from Bent's Fort on the Colorado Plains, but this ft.bridger might be on the next to do list!

Bent's Old Fort
Bridger
Fort Uncompahgre

A friend restored many of the buildings at all three of these locations as well as others in NM, CO, WY, NE.  He's made a pretty good living of working on old and new log structures as well as adobe.  Last time we talked was few years ago after he moved from the Montrose CO now in north eastern Colorado doing the same thing.

All three of these sites are well done for what they were in the day.

I visited Uncompahgre while under construction and was impressed with modern techniques applied to process, to improve and preserve without betraying the period correct construction and presentation....I got some great ideas for future projects...concur with Buck about all three.

I love Bents fort! This summer, the top comes off the Jeep and I am taking a ride out there to enjoy the fort.

I will have to look through my files, have a list of the better settlements, forts and stockades across North American. Some are better than others, I'll get back with that list.

That list will be useful, Mr. Connor. Thank you for mentioning it.

In the spring of 1972 the National Parks System had a ribbon cutting to start work on the building of "Bent's Old Historical Fort". A small group of us were invited to attend, "bring your primitive camps, wear your period clothing, we will have shooting of muzzleloaders". This is what we were required to have to enter the property. Like said "A day out is always good".

1). We go to the site the day before get setup and just have a pleasant camp that night. The next day the NPS folks show up around 10AM and start setting up for their "Ribbon Cutting" affair.

2). The governor shows up with his body guards, many of us know Dick Lamb (he's an old buckskinner and a pretty damn good shot). He's wearing the most beautiful set of brain tanned leathers we have seen (just the right amount of wear to really look good, just like a David Wright painting). The governor is carrying a Homer Dangler flinter and he knows how to use it guys, like said a damn good shot.

3). We are honored to meet Davey Crockett's great granddaughter (she's probably in her 80's) very nice person, she there to cut the ribbon. Cool ....

4). After the affair is over the governor asks if we have extra bedding and a place he can slide into to. "You bet your ass" was the out cry. We feed him and his guards (they went back to town for the night), we became his guards and were told to "load up boys", which we did. Spent most of the night in an 18 foot tipi talking and listening to him tell us how government really works. Probably the most interesting camp we had or ever have had since.

An old AMM brother is the one that built this fort along with many others in surrounding states his name is Bill Bailey, very good craftsman.

It may not be a Fort, but an interesting place to visit is the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden.
They have a great collection of old, narrow gauge engines and cars, both freight and passenger. There even is the "Grey Ghost," a truck cab and engine with steel narrow gauge wheels for use on tracks.
Indoors are model trains and dioramas.

Many years ago, I was visiting the museum and an old fellow likely in his 80s and his son were admiring some engines. One of those steam engines was a full size 6-8-6 (or 6-4-6), but narrow gauge classic. The older fellow told me that it was his engine at one time. He also explained that he had a team maintaining that engine, boiler makers, blacksmiths, welders, etc. who kept it going. They were his family away from family. He also explained how his speed was limited in the curves due to the fact that the wheels did not turn with the curve, but just wanted to continue straight. That created high stresses on the curved rails and wore them out. The diesel electric engines that replaced the steam engine had rotating carriages or gurneys holding the wheels and the wheels could follow the curve. That reduced track wear and permitted higher speed in the curves.

I listened to that old fellow reminisce for over an hour. It was a fascinating experience.

In return for Conner's generous time for listing the forts, here is some detail about Colorado Forts.

If you're traveling on the Santa Fe Trail National Scenic and Historic Byway, don't miss one of Colorado's must-see attractions: a stop at Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site near La Junta. Built in 1833 by William and Charles Bent and their partner, Ceran St. Vrain, the original trading post was a conduit of commerce for people living on the plains of the region. It had enough sleeping rooms to house up to 200 people, and it quickly became a center for cultural interaction between American settlers, Mexicans and Plains Indians. In fact, the Bent brothers made great strides to maintain good relations with the Arapaho, Kiowa and Cheyenne Indians who hunted on the land around the fort.
In 1835, William Bent married Mis-stan-sta or Owl Woman, the daughter of White Thunder, a holy man among the Cheyenne people. Their marriage helped bridge the two cultures and maintain peace between them.
Today, you can stroll among the extensive network of rooms and corridors and visualize what life was like in an old trading post. The fort was reconstructed in 1976 and is made of adobe, an efficient building material used in the dry climates of the West. Employees at the fort dress in period clothing and encourage you to ask any questions you might have about the area's past.
Fort Uncompahgre, Delta
Watch Ute Indian dancers clad in buckskin and other traditional garb engage in traditional dances in Delta. Every summer, Fort Uncompahgre — a military fort turned living museum — hosts Thunder Mountain Lives Tonight. In addition to the dances, interpreters are on hand to demonstrate and explain the how and why of pioneer fur trapping, hide tanning and even arrowhead making. Throughout the rest of the year, visitors are encouraged to take a self-guided tour to learn about fort life and the lucrative and dangerous business of fur trapping. Before its life as an interpretive museum, Fort Uncompahgre stood as a staging point for United States soldiers who stood against American Indian attacks on white fur trappers in western Colorado.
El Pueblo Fort, Pueblo
See the lives and livelihoods of the white settlers and American Indians of the area chronicled at the El Pueblo History Museum in Pueblo. Once a fort, a great amount of goods came through El Pueblo’s doors in the mid to late 1800s. It served as a sanctuary for a number of well-to-do traders who built their incomes by trading with the Ute and Apache Indians in the area. The demise of the fort came at the hands of the same tribes with which they traded. Angered over the rampant spread of disease and encroachment on their land, a band of Ute and Apache warriors stormed the fort and captured or killed many of its inhabitants. The fort was abandoned shortly thereafter, and years later, other settlers built over it. Now, thanks largely to the efforts of a local historian, parts of the old fort have been reclaimed from the earth, and a history museum sits near the fort’s original site, featuring painstakingly replicated sections of the original fort.
Fort Vasquez, Platteville
Learn the inner workings of the Fort Vasquez fur-trading post found just north of Denver, near Greeley in Platteville. Louis Vasquez (the fort’s namesake) was a trapper in the early 1880s who made his living bartering furs from the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians in return for food and shot. A reconstructed fort stands almost exactly where the original was built. And now, you can tour the replica fort, as well as the museum and visitor center, also located on site. Unlike other trading posts of the era, Fort Vasquez did not succumb to American Indian attack or fold due to extreme hardship. Instead, it was abandoned in the late 19th century due to the declining demand for its main commodity — beaver pelt.
Fort Garland, Town of Fort Garland
In the 1800s, increased settler protection became a priority. Fort Garland, built in 1858, was constructed in direct response to this need. With an infantry and cavalry unit — each with up to 100 soldiers — it protected new settlers in the San Luis Valley against resistant Ute Indians, who had made their traditional home there for centuries. Over its life, the fort drew distinguished soldiers, including storied frontiersman Kit Carson. Even fabled Buffalo Soldiers (black troops assigned to the Western Frontier after the Civil War) were stationed there during the fort’s tenure. A Congressional Medal of Honor recipient was among the ranks of the black soldiers stationed there. Today, it has been rebuilt as a living museum. Along with learning the history of this military fort, you can also view Hispanic folk art on display. And don't forget to take a self-guided tour through one of the most interesting parts of the fort: The Commandant’s Quarters, a replica of the room used by Kit Carson.
Fort Morgan, Town of Fort Morgan
Constructed in 1865 a half mile from the South Platte River on a strategic tract of land know as Morgan Flats, Fort Morgan gave a commanding view of the entire river valley, as well as the north side of the South Platte River. As the only army presence between Julesburg to the east and the populated regions of the Rockies in the west, it was the United States’ largest organized armed presence for miles. While the fort no longer stands, you can tour the Fort Morgan Museum for military- and area-related history.

I donated some items I had from the Pennsylvania Railroad System. My great grandfather was a railroad engineer, he was assigned to the Teddy Roosevelt "Bull Moose" tour across the US. Had many experiences from train being robbed to being derailed.

His son my grandfather was a railroad man also, was Chief Conductor on the famous "Broadway Limited" that took stock brokers to the exchange from Phila. to New York City daily.

A great uncle that was a engineer for Union Pac. that brought folks from Chicago to Wallace KS to shoot buffalo when our government decided to get rid of the food source and put the Native America in a controlled area.

The Golden Museum couldn't believe what I gave them, no charge. Better for everyone to enjoy than have this stuff sitting in boxes at my house.

I would not leave out the "Oregon Trail Center" in Baker City, Oregon. Very authentic and informational center and an opportunity to walk in the wagon tracks of the Oregon trail. My ancestors (I'm 5th generation Oregonian) came to Oregon on the trail some time in around 1850+ and settled in Southern Oregon. The book "History of the Modoc Wars" mentions my G Grandfather as he had befriended the Modoc leadership sharing the same territory on a friendly basis.

I noticed that Fort Lupton is not mentioned? I have yet to tour it but it is a reconstructed fur trade fort with a mini museum and gift shop nearby. There is a muzzleloader range and Archery range (Ft Lupton Muzzleloader Association) a short walking distance from the Fort.

fort robinson in western ne. is state owned and kept up. thats where the cheyenne broke out and where crazy horse was murdered. beautiful country and lots of camping space. trails and fishing. it was used by the army for a very very long time. even into WW2. in the blue coat days their was even a concrete swimming pool built for the soldiers. it is their to day, cant say if it is in use any more. if you like horse barns, they have the best horse barns you ever saw. i followed soldier creek to its source several years ago. it comes out of a 500 ft cliff, gushing out of a spring at the bottom of the cliff about 3 ft wide back then and a couple of ft deep. pure clean spring water. another place to visit is the lewis and clark winter camp north of washburn n.dak along the big fast river they camped on. a side bar about ft. robinson. crazy horse wasnt murdered by a blue coat soldier. he was stabbed by a fellow sioux who he had a family dispute with. the army took the blame as they didnt want a sioux civil war on their hands. their were 5000 sioux camped around ft. robinson at the time of his death, and all you know what could have broke out. they the army said we did it so the natives could focus on them and not each other.
