....to all you Fathers, grand-fathers and, in my case, great grandfathers.
I didn't know my dad until I was 43 when I decided I wanted to know where he was at or where he was buried. He was alive for 4 years after I found him but he couldn't get out of the bottle long enough to really get to "know" him. At his funeral I found out that I had a half-sister and half-brother, 10 aunts and uncles and 128 cousins, something I never learned in those 4 years. He apparently left my Mother right after he got her knocked up again and before she realized she was pregnant with me. She never told him and he never knew I existed until I tracked him down in a bar in NE Iowa, a little country burg called Luana. He looked just like the one picture I'd seen of him.
