Just came back from the river,(Hudson, Hoboken area), everyone was doing well on herring. All that is required are a few Sabiki rigs.....

I'll post a pickled herring recipe in the food forum....

:D Sounds like fun Jeff. In April we get a decent herring run up the Cheasapeake on up Susquehanna River to first Dam...Conowingo Hydro Plant. We catchem on very small shaddarts. A blast to catch and decent eatin too. I love the roe fried up.

I usually freeze some for catfish/striper bait.

Saw ur recipe ...looks like a good one.

These herring in the Hudson are the returning spawners from the spring run as well.
We usually fish them live upriver, for stripers. Unfortunately, by the time they get down here in the summer the river based Bass run has slowed considerably....

Remember using a boat is cheating... :D
Seriously that is why I said slowing...not gone. They become more difficult to catch from shore as the water begins to warn in the early summer. But there are clearly still some around.
