Folks, including myself, often overestimate the weight of wild hogs.
300 pound wild hogs are very rare. Been hunting and trapping wild hogs since 2000 and have accounted for 550-600 hogs. Only 5 or 6 weighed 300 pounds or more. Two were shot the same day.
400 pound wild hogs are nearly non-existent.
How to accurately estimate the weight of a hog:
1. Measure the heart girth in inches using a cloth tape.
2. Square the heart girth.
3. Measure the distance between the base of the tail to between the ears.
4. Mulitply 2 and 3.
5. Divide by 400.
Example, a hog with a heart girth of 50 inches and base of tail to between the ears measurement of 40 inches.
50x50=2,500x40=100,000 divided by 400=250 pounds.
Getting the hog to stand still could be a problem. But the formula works with dead hogs too.
