2019 whitetail.jpg View attachment 6371 I Hunted deer pretty hard, for about 15 of the 20 day ml controlled hunt season. At least half of that with my brother, who drew an antlerless elk tag for the same time frame. We saw a number of small to medium bucks, early on, but I was holding out for something bigger. We filled the elk tag the first week. I say "we", because I made sure we recovered it. My brother took a shot that was further than he'd thought, I measured at 195 yards. Having seen no reaction, no blood, and no elk, he thought he had missed. I found the tracks where the herd had spooked, and a couple hundred yards down the ridiculously steep hill, there was one loan elk, just standing there. Turns out he'd hit a front leg with the first shot, but at least we recovered the very tasty calf elk. Traditions Buck Stalker, 90 grains RS, 370 grain TC Maxiball.
We saw bucks most days, but only caught sight of one really giant muley, and couldn't get anywhere near close enough. The last day, I hunted whitetail much closer to the house. I was willing to tag any legal buck at that point, and was frustrated to not get a shot at a nice spike that morning. With about two hours left of my season, this beautiful 10 point showed up. He was at 35 yards, but partly behind a pine tree. I was able to hit the last part of lung, and liver. TC Northwest Explorer, 73 grains by weight RS, 370 grain Maxiball. Persistence pays.
Also, note the elk and whitetail does in the driveway. Sometimes it pays to hunt closer to home. My brother's elk was a mere two miles up the mountain. View attachment 6367 View attachment 6368 View attachment 6367 View attachment 6368 View attachment 6367 View attachment 6368

Yes! This is, by far, my best whitetail, best I've seen on my own property, and the first deer I've taken to the taxidermist for a shoulder mount. He was just too pretty not to.
