Petals breaking off

Can anyone tell me why two of the petals are breaking off of my sabots? Shot 7 time and 5 of them did it. 

Went out Friday to zero my Remington 700 M/L was shooting 90 grains of Pyrodex select, a 200 grain
Shock Wave bullet, musket cap primer. The first time I did this about a year ago I didn't see this, had to replace the scope on the rifle. Both petals were side by side only had one that they were across from each other.  

My thoughts lean toward the plastic has some age on it and they have become brittle. Anybody else have thoughts?

Mr Dawg1215, I agree with your reasoning here. I have a few laying in my junk box that are older. When I tried to see if they had stiffened, I broke some petals off easily. Can't tell you the brand cause it's been  a while.

use mmp heavy duty sabots and it wont happen. also wipe your barrel between rounds. switch to another powder, all the rest are way more consistant accurate than pyrodex. if blackhorn 209 or real black is available to you they are the most accurate consistanly of the powders. triple 777 is also accurate but i dont like dealing with the hard crud ring in the compustion chamber. if the crud ring doesnt bother you triple 777 is way better than pyrodex. pyrodes is very very dirty and will rust your barrel out fast. even if you weigh each charge it is iffy on accuracy.

Ok thanks guys for the info. I have had those Shock waves for about 5 years and I felt that they were just brittle, had never seen the warning that Buck had posted. And strong eagle I have never tried the mmp sabots have read a lot about them on the forum.

I don't really care for 777 because of the crud ring, but I am a big fan of the real black powder, I use it in all my caplocks. I have a plan and that is to use up all the pyrodex and then just go with real black, I can get Goex in my area.

nothing more accurate than real black, just wipe between rounds.

The accuracy was the same as when I had the other scope on it, or at least I couldn't tell no difference.

I think the main thing here is , no matter if the petals break off or not, set them in the bore ,alongside the bullet and drive the whole mess down home. That,s what I done just to see. The bullet goes right on. I would be willing to bet differently if your threw one or two petals away. I really see me not using a sabot . Hell for what they cost for one pack, I can shoot alot more with my own cast stuff, balls or slugs.

Hunting_Dawg1215, if your sabots are old just go buy a couple more packs of new sabots to use with your bullets and toss those old ones.  I wouldn't even scratch my head over them.  

I haven't used the T/C shockwave bullets for hunting but have on the shooting range.  Very accurate bullet.

That's correct and I agree. Somes we try to make everything we have useable once again and after wasting a lot of effort and time end up doing like Joe has stated. "Bite The Bullet" and throw those old sabots away.

I don't shoot in-lines but have seen Doc White shoot them in traditional muzzleloaders. I'm wondering if you can see a difference between the two types of guns for being accurate (one better than the other)?

I agree on buying new ones and tossing the others not a issue and that thought had crossed my little pea brain. But as they say curiosity kill the cat, I was just wondering if maybe I was pushing to much powder for this bullet, that all.

And yes I have shot them in my cap lock before. Shot the T/C cheap shot all lead hollow point, also Hornady XTP jackete3d hollow point, both with the black sabot brand name skips my mind. I used 70 grains by volume of Pyrodex. Pyrodex is easy to get in my area back then. They were very accurate, killed a few turkeys in the late season with the cheap shots.

as I said before I use Goex 2f in the caplocks now. Pyrodex in the in lines until I run out and then real black is the plan in all.
