Sidelock Bore Measurement

What is the best way to get a bore measurement on a 54 cal. T/C Renegade when you cannot push a ball completely through the barrel. Also what size ball would you use to take the measurement on said . 54 cal rifle?

What size ball won't go down the barrel? I can wrap a .015" patch around a .535 round ball and push it down the barrel of my .54 Renegade.
To measure I would use calipers, measure the lands.
