Those of you who read it know that I got a CVA Scout in .45-70 and I've shot it a couple times with my handloads. First load was 51 gr of H4198 under a Hornady 300 gr hollow point. Today I as shooting the 325 gr FTX with loads from 42 to 46 gr of H4198 (47.9 gr is max). I haven't had any signs of pressure but not sure what pressures the Scout can handle.
What loads are you guys shooting out of your Scout conversions?

A common load for the Scout is 60 grains of either IMR or H4198 with a 275 grain bullet. My Apex conversion is loaded with 60 grains of H4198, a veggie wad, and a knurled 250 grain Barnes TEZ bullet. Avg. velocity was around 2550 fps and accuracy is very good.

Hankin has said his Scout conversions are good for 65 grains of IMR4198 with a 275 grain bullet.

There are people that take H4198 up to 65 gr in Converted Scouts. I don't have a Scout, i have a NEF converted. I can't handle the recoil on my shoulder with any loads taking the psi above 35000.

10 gr/50 gr IMR SR4759/H4198 with a Barnes 250 gr T-EZ and a dry wool wad would be a good option. Peak pressure is 32 ksi IIRC.

Thanks guys and keep them coming. I use H4198 for a couple of my .45-70s and also use IMR3031 for another. In fact I'm breaking the Scout's barrel in with 46 gr of H4198 and a 325 gr FTX bullet. Man 60-65 gr of H4198 with a 275 gr bullet seems really stout! With the 325 gr FTX bullet my manual for the .45-70 list 47.9 gr as max. I would guess the difference is due to the bullet diameter. .458" for the cartridge vs the .451" for the muzzleloader.

Your reply is a bit confusing. Are you saying 10 gr of IMR SR4759 and 50 gr of H4198 with Barnes 250 TEZ?
It is a duplex load. The 10 gr of IMR SR4759 goes in first then the 50 gr of H4198. When I got into smokeless MLing in 2011 duplex loads were very popular. Better ignition in cold temperatures and less temperature sensitivity. I still use them exclusively as do a few others.

I see. The problem I would have with that is for hunting. It would be fine at the range or for a first shot but it would be a hassle to keep the powders in separate tubes and there is no way to put a duplex load in a charge tube and keep the powders separated. Moving around during the day would mix them up. How do you manage that?

It is no hassle at all. I have short and long tubes for the two different powders. Bullet and wad or bullet and sabot are in their own tubes. The little bit of extra time in the overall loading process is miniscule. I have only ever used duplex loads for hunting.

I use Lanes tubes, the short ones, then glued them together, with the caps at the opposite end. one with a red cap for the booster load and the other is green for the main charge.

This is what I use for loads. One side will hold 62 gr of N120 the other side will hold the 275 gr Fury and Module.
Or it can be used for a Duplex load.

This is what I use. 57 grn 4198 in each outside tube. The middle tube has (2) 225 Fury/ Lt. Blue sabots. Also holds (4) 209A primers. I carry 2 of these, so with the load in my Omega I have 5 shots (just in case I get overran by hogs)

I use an almost identical setup. 56gr of i4198 in 2 spots and 2 - 195 barnes in the 3rd spot. I keep two of those holders on a tether round my neck.

Darn you enablers. Looks like I'm going to have to order some 225 gr Furys and see how they shoot. Problem is I won't be back home until the end of May.....Grrrr
