I was wondering if you experts in the field could give your opinion on patching between shots while using 777 FFF with sabot. I have read that some use their own concoction and others use spit. What are most of you using on your patch? Getting older and don’t have a lot of spit left.

If target shooting, I will use one "spit" patch, which for me means licking the cotton patch. I then run a couple more patches through. If hunting, and need a quick follow up shot I run no patches, but if time permits, I will use the same procedure as target shooting.

Butch's Black Powder Bore Shine. Butch's Bore Shine Black Powder Bore Cleaning Solvent 8oz Liquid

One damp, not wet, patch both sides. It works excellent with T7. Not only for patching between rounds, but for cleaning. You can completely clean a rifle with 5 patches. Try doing that with BH.
It's what the UF and RUM shooters use and they're shooting much heavier T7 charges than production rifles.

you use 777 powder 😲 ?
I shoot 777 in my Whites, which I’ve been shooting quite a bit the past couple weeks. 😊 The brush works great - but I don’t get much of a crud ring with the #11 caps. I started using a brass brush between shots years ago with black powder in Africa.

Never got a brush stuck but I’ve gotten several spit patches stuck in the field!

I cant stand putting a patch in my mouth or licking a patch so i always have a small bottle of windex with alcohol added. But those times ive forgotten it at the range ive used rain water, melted snow, and bottled water. Havent tried beer, tequila or urine. But i bet almost anything with water will work to take that crud ring right out. It is very easy to remove.

I've never used a spit patch, I couldn't believe that I needed moisture in the barrel and I always had plenty of lubricated patches with me, and they work just fine. When I chewed, I had lots of spit, but old age what it is, there isn't much left and I don't chew anymore. It seemed like every concoction that I tried worked for a round ball patch and also for running down the barrel if needed, the experiment is still going on, and when the weather gets good I'll be out there trying the next new thing. Wouldn't be much point in just going out to shoot if I didn't have something to try out. This applied to black powder, pyrodex and right now 777. That seemed to have little effect,, the powder that was used.

Spit patch for me. Always have that handy!

If you don’t want to use spit, you can have a small spray bottle with water

Remember that 777 is WATER SOLUBLE so you can use anything that is water based. Windex is used a lot and here are the ingredients. Notice the first one listed is water. 0EE803FD-E7D5-4176-918E-1D7DFD827F8B.png

Saliva seems to be the method of choice and it does have a natural lubricant. Windex has ammonia and isopropyl has a flash point. I wonder if I could find a “Mr Chemistry Set” and come up with something that cleans as well as lubricates. Maybe some natural oils or something. Spit balling here.

One reason a lot of people like windex is because the ammonia and alcohol. Both dry faster than saliva or plain water. But when I run a dry patch (both sides) after the spit, I seem to be dry.

You don’t want lubrication while you are shooting. Only after you shoot
