New guy here with a question.


Why is it that to get bore diameter you are supposed to slug the barrel the mic it. Why not just mic the bore?

I'm sure there is a great reason...I'm just not thinking of it.

Most people don't own the precision measuring equipment that it would require to measure inside the bore accurately, i.e. bore gauge. And using a dial caliper's inside measuring jaws inside the muzzle is not a very accurate method. Another issue arises if the barrel has an odd number of grooves. There are no two points 180* apart to place between the anvils of the mic or the blades of a caliper. You have to use gauge blocks to measure and calculate the groove diameter of the slug. Now if you are looking only for bore diameter (and not groove) the easiest way to measure that regardless of rifling is pin gauges. You can get the bore diameter in a matter of seconds down to the last .0001"-.0002" depending on what class of gauge you are using.
