Hillary or Trump?

Once upon a time.... there was a president, FDR, who wanted to put through the NIRA (National Industrial Recovery Act), the NRA (National Recovery Administration) and other socialist programs (remind you of anyone?). They were unanimously deemed unconstitutional by the 9-member Supreme Court so FDR tried to get his Democratic congress to vote to institute an 11-man Supreme Court and then he could appoint 2 more justices and get his way.

A funny thing happened. The Democratically-stacked Congress decided that so much power shouldn't go to the Executive branch and they shot it down.

This historical lesson may not be relevant in this day and age but it damned well better be or we are in deep ****. With Hillary and a Democratic Congress they will try to ramrod these liberal/progressive laws through and do their best to remove the protections of the Second Amendment.

Fortunately, the House, Senate, and president must all agree on bills for them to pass. This built-in redundancy is our nation's greatest asset. When all 3 are of one party, terrible laws get enacted. This is how Obamacare came to be. I am always happy when there is no unanimous "triad" to push through biased laws. If it is a good law, it will pass regardless. If it's a bad law, in-fighting will usually stop it. I sure hope that's the case after November. :pale:

Excellent point, Bob!
The tripartite system with its checks and balances was a brilliant idea by the forefathers.

What it also suggests is the importance of the results down-ticket. Again, Trump plays a role here, a BIG role.
I have been wrong in my predictions about Trump all throughout this nominating campaign and repeatedly said he will never get the nomination. Wishful thinking clouded my vision. Tell me that  I haven't learned my lesson, but I don't think it is remotely possible that he will win a general election.

He has the vote and attention of a part of the highly alienated political right. But that is only a portion of all the Republicans. He has some conservative Republicans voicing disapproval. He has a large number of moderate and "mainstream" Republicans saying they won't support him. That large swath of moderate independents won't be drawn to him and the Democrats, of course, won't cross over.

If I am right, and the dislike and disapproval of Trump trickles down to the legislative elections, then you are looking at a Democrat-run Senate, at least. I don't think that the House will turn as there are too many seats to make up. But just a few seats in the Senate and Hillary as president, and our world changes. Hillary will get to nominate Supreme Court justices, and guess what that means if there is a Senate with a Democrat majority.

Democrats used to be the saving grace of conservatism with the southern "Dixiecrats" led by Estes Kefauver of Tennessee. If it weren't for these democrats, there would have been no conservatives in government in the fifties. Even later there was a small minority of democrats who supported the military and the Second Amendment (remember Sam Nunn of Georgia?).

Democrats don't have to be the evil party but for some reason they have evolved into a party against individual freedoms and have championed federal control of all things.

Does anyone know how this came about? I am ignorant concerning the chain of events that got us here.

Dems want our guns. Repubs want our Social Security. Tough choice for old guys.

To be honest. Losing guns is bad, but losing SS would put me on the street homeless.

The way Trump keeps switching his views on issues. I don't trust him with my SS.

Pete....I dont think any thing will happen to SS to the people recieving it now..it would be to devastating ...i read some of the write up on SS proposals...and it was mostly on future recipiants...it was like some money went to SS an some goes to something like a 401k plan...

they could not to SS by any means...it would put millions on the street...

I don't trust them. There's some republicans that want to do away with SS completely. What they say they'll do now and what they'll do when they have the power to do it are two different things.

I think its a scare tactic...think about it..there are people in nursing home..assitant living centers...housing for the elderly...if SS was stopped these people would be homeless...it would be a very bad image for the country...doing this would be a hard pill to swallow for Americans who paid into the system all thier working lives...

I remember my grandmother come home from the store where all the codgers hung out. "Reagan's going to take away my social security", she'd cry. I would try to calm her by telling her that no president can take away anything by himself. She always thought I was lying to her because all the oldsters were fomenting panic at the grocery store and they knew better.

The Libs may cut out social programs for citizens so they can give it to illegals. They already give illegal families $1200+ more than American families.

I don't want my check cut at all. I just make it now. You notice no COL this year.

I did not get a COL in my regular retirement..my VA pension or SS...reason was the consumer price actualy lowered this past year due to low gas heating fuel and food prices...which is not fair but how they base it...its a crazy system..

after the elections as always the economy will take a shitter and we will get a COL...wall street will be in a turmoil...

I had to look up the annual CPI the other day for my renter. From April 2015 to March 2016, the CPI rose 0.9%. A bit short of 1%.
