I finally got to go to my range today with the 54 TC Firehawk I recently acquired. I learned that both TC Maxi balls and Hornady great plains in 54 are not made anymore. Always shot the TC maxi-ball with good results in old Firehawk. I found and ordered a 20 pack of unlubed 54 caliber TC maxi-balls from track of the Wolf along with lubed wonder wads, and SPG lube from Midway. The 2 youngest grandkids helped with the pan lubing last night.
Went to the range this morning and loaded up with 100 grains of Triple 7 FFFG. Achieved 1462 Fps with that load. 2nd shot with 90 grains felt good, got 1374 fps. 3rd shot got 1367. Took measurement then made scope adjustment before firing 3 shot group. Shots 4,5, and 6 made a pretty good group. Felt satisfied with load that averaged 1367 FPS with only slight deviations. loaded up 1 more for a 100 yard test on deer sized target. result would be a dead deer. Very happy with the way this Firehawk shoots conicals. TC was on to something with the 1:38 twist. This will be my creek bottom and still hunting rifle. Can't wait to make meat next season. TC
