While I'm not Lewis. I have had extensive experience with making bullets, and testing hardness on game like muledeer, and elk.
I have killed a few elk with the Lee 500S&W bullet. The distance range from 50 yards to 248 yards.
With the Lee 500S&W bullet in my opinion the hardness of between 6 and 7 bhn is about perfect.

Dave (No Excuses) requested this bullet be shot with a load of 80g Blackhorn powder.

What was retained weight?

Any real world results with the .410 bullet?

Thanks for the replies. So, Idahoron, you use pure lead? What is the weight of that bullet? How much powder? Do you get full penetration on elk?

I'm using lead that is between 6 and 7 bhn. It is hardened just a pinch. The bullet is 458 grains. This bullet killed the bull DRT at 248 yards. It broke the shoulder and spine. Then broke the off shoulder and was found under the skin.the bullet only lost 4 grains.
One elk same load blew through. Another elk was shot at 60 yards. That bullet crushed the shoulder and was found I'm the flank.
