A VERY good morning ! good fall it sounds like !
where on the deer did you hit them? How do you carry your follow up shot?
Ben
The buck I took a couple of weeks ago was coming at me at 90 yd. The bullet hit him just behind the point of the left shoulder, traveled completely through him lengthwise and broke the right hip on exit.
The buck Thursday was also at 90 yd but was broadside and gave me a perfect high lung shot. A simple hole on entry and one on exit but the lungs were destroyed and the shock ruptured the aorta because the whole body cavity was filled with blood.
The doe was a little different. She was at 70 yd walking straight at me. I didn't want to take the head on shot and deal with ruptured intestines so I took a high shoulder shot. She was too close and the bullet moving too fast so the hit was a bit explosive, causing much more damage than I would like, as the photo shows. In retrospect I should have taken a low chest shot at the heart.
I should add that all these were shot with smokeless muzzleloader. The first buck was taken with my Brux/Omega and the 275 Fury FAT I used was chronographed during practice at 2550 fps MV. The other 2 deer were taken with my McRem rifle and although I did not chronograph the 275 Fury Star Tip 2 I was using, from the increased powder from the Brux/Omega load, and opinions from others using a similar load, I estimate the bullet was somewhere between 2700-2800 fps MV.
I take premeasured powder charges in Lane's 5 ml tubes. I use a 10 ml tube to carry 3 extra bullets and veggie wads and a small diameter tube that holds 12 primers. I have a shelf in my blind where I set up a tube of powder, wad, bullet, primer, powder funnel, short starter and assembled 3 piece ramrod, ready to reload when needed.
