Expected Velocity

I'll be elk hunting this fall in Idaho. I have a Traditions Buckstalker. I chronographed a 10 shot group using 100 gr of Pyrodex RS and a 420 pure lead No Excuse bullet. Avg velocity...2265. Std dev...15 fps. The thing groups like a dream...even without swabbing between those 10 shots.

Is this the best I can do velocity wise???

Can’t do any better than that. That’s remarkable! Published load data would put you closer to 1400 fps with Pyrodex and 1450 with 777.

I highly doubt that velocity is even remotely close to actual.

Triple 7 3f might give you a bit more speed. May or may not group the same as what you got now. Pick up a pound and try it out.

Typo...I typed 2265. The avg was 1265.

A bit more powder, a longer barrel, a "hotter" powder might take it up a few FPS but probably not much. You have plenty of oomph there. Maybe refocus on knowing your trajectory and accuracy limits.

Here is my last group at 100 yds. Used a lead sled to take me out of the equation.
