This is my first concave buttplate, even though the stock was already cut for a plate I had to heat and bend this plate to get it close to the stock contour. Then using inletting black I sloooowly and tediously removed small bits of wood.  It still has about 1/8" until the center matches the stock.

Before I use brass on a custom gun i'll rather opt for cast pewter for the parts that don't take a beating.
 
Yeah but the pills that come out the barrel will do it faster.....so i'll take me chances !  ;)
 
That is an 1884 springfield trapdoor .45-70 being nestled in a Hawken style stock.  It is black powder but not a muzzleloader

And, modern pewter has very little or no lead in it depending on where you get it.
