I placed a very low bid on an auction site expecting to be outbid right away but, ....I won !  It's used and has some warts but, it should serve well as a first rifle and it's hard to beat for the price.  It's a CVA Hawkin in .50 Cal.
Now to find accessories.  :)

Oh buddy you did good! Those are a ton of fun and excellent shooters. I can help you out greatly with that one, where to make improvements, etc. All kinds of good stuff! I built/rebuilt 14 of them so far.

Thanks for the support.

Oooo! Nice buy, Rowdy!

FG, that is an beautiful stain. What you using? What you cleaning the brass with? And, are you re-bluing them? (Yes, I am too lazy to go through all those links. :geek:)

KY, I used Birchwood Casey Walnut stain on that one. For the brass, I used a green scotchbrite scuff pad and brushed it all in one direction. I hate polished brass personally. I don't re-blue barrels, just brown them or do the antique in the white finish.

Yes, beautiful work on all of those guns you have linked.  Wish I had the talent for that.

How much is involved in re-bluing ore "browning" a used barrel like mine?  (see link to pictures).  The woodwork and brass on mine looks to be OK but, the barrel & lock could probably use some help.  What do you think?

browning a barrel can be a real headache, especially with prep work and then the humidity treatment to activate the rusting.

Browning a lock is an even bigger pain in the ass because the hammer is hardened so much, its hard to rust. I usually use 80 grit sand paper to break through and hope for the best.

I do offer a barrel browning service which includes the entire barrel, under rib, screws and tang. I charge $65 which includes return shipping.

That sounds like a good deal.  I'll keep it in mind.

Is that because the polished brass finger prints badly? When I used Brasso, the brass never seemed to stay shiny. It finger printed and seemed to need a new polish every 10 minutes. Does the scotchbrite method stay nice for a decent time?
