Hi Group,
Wanted to share some more data. I bought an unfired blued G2 contender 209 .45 cal muzzleloader a couple of weeks ago. I was looking to make this my 200 - 250 yard powerline deer muzzleloader. Prior to shooting I shimmed the barrel to the frame using several 0.005 shim washers due to side to side play between the barrel and frame when it was closed. The shimming worked like a charm to tighten the action when closed. I also found and bought 6 spare breech plugs.
Load One -200 grain SST .40 cal
Temperature 53 F
Pressure 30.22 in Hg
Primer 209 CCI Mag
Powder 100 gains by volume Blackhorn 209
Sabot & Bullet Hornady 0.45 cal 200 Grain SST sabot and bullet box, Part number 67132
Shot #1 2018 FPS (clean, Cold Bore)
Shot #2 2088 FPS
Shot #3 2112 FPS
Notes: Recoil is fine, I like this Muzzleloader!
Load Two - 200 grain SST .40 cal
Temperature 53 F
Pressure 30.22 in Hg
Primer 209 CCI Mag
Powder 120 gains by volume Blackhorn 209
Sabot & Bullet Hornady 0.45 cal 200 Grain SST sabot and bullet box, Part number 67132
Shot #1 2313 FPS
Shot #2 2361 FPS
Shot #3 2112 FPS
Notes: Recoil is fine, Looks like time to buy another scope!
I have a soft spot for short barreled muzzleloaders. The G2 .45 cal was on my want list for about 3 years, it was worth the wait. The down side is that the G2 is almost too pretty for my style of hunting. This rifle will stay out of the salt marshes....
